Description: One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start...
One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start in 1905, Louis Zwerlein's "Kare Killer" was a most unusual place. One had to get there by boat since it was built on a floating barge anchored out in the bay. One of its side attractions was that it afforded a fine view of the approaching boats from shore. On occasion, a husband sighting his wife on a course for the barge would dive headlong off the far side and strike out for Great Neck. When prohibition killed the Kare Killer in 1916, the business moved to a spot adjacent to the Town Dock, renting boats, selling chowder and other seafood. Another move in the early thirties placed the restaurant in its present location still on the Main Street waterfront. In 1954, it was expanded into an adjoining building that had originally been a blacksmith shop.

Great location with mediocre food and staff that has no training.

I keep coming back because of location to work. Food is not top notch seafood you would expect for a 'seafood restaurant'. Staff is boy d to fail if they are not trained.

Living in Port Washington, we know how busy Louie's is from springtime through fall.....great outdoor space with a terrific view! We choose to go to Louie's during the wintertime, especially for Sunday brunch.......relaxing to enjoy a midday meal while looking out at Manhasset Bay. Brunch menu includes a choice of a Bellini, Bloody Mary or Mimosa! The wait staff is... More

We had striped bass cooked to perfection. You rarely see striped bass on a menu. We were there in winter so couldn't eat outside, but I can imagine the outside seating would be great in summer. The atmosphere inside was great, the service good and they have a good selection of craft beers and wine. Not inexpensive, but worth it.

I used to live in Port Washington, New York and my parents favorite restaurant was Louie's Oyster Bar and Grill. So, 10 years later, me and the wife naturally decided that this would be a great place for our anniversary, even though there were rumors that Louies was going downhill. The rumors were right and I couldn't have been more... More

I eat at Louie's fairly regularly. It sits right on the bay and outdoor seating is available when the weather allows. Sitting outside is great, but the décor within the spacious restaurant is very nice as well. The menu is dominated by seafood selections and the food is dependably good, though it's a little pricey (particularly for lunch when I... More

Although we were here for a baby shower food and service were not typical "group" fare. Obviously the location is a big draw but we were there when it was 35 degrees outside so we had to be content with the view through the huge windows. The food was excellent and very generous and the service very attentive. I had... More

Happy hours and summer nights, this is the place to be. Come by boat or car as they have their own dock and dock master. Plenty of outdoor seating on the water. Food presentation is great, but nothing special for the high price tag. Your really paying for the view. Service is great, make reservations via opentable to earn points.... More

We were invited for lunch by friends who live in Port Washington and were charmed by the great location. The restaurant is literally sitting on the water and must be a very busy place in the summer. On our Saturday visit it was too cold to be outside and we sat down inside. The waitress was very attentive and the... More

We went there for Mother's Day and we sat outside overlooking the bay. The weather, the food and the view was fantastic. It was a very enjoyable day and I recommend this place highly.

Louie's has been at this location forever but has changed in decor vastly from its beginnings. You can watch boats go by your window while you eat and drink and in good weather you can seat outside and dine. That's the good part-if you like greasy food maybe that's good fro you too but not for me. I ordered the... More
