Description: One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start...
One of Long Island's oldest and most colorful restaurants. From its start in 1905, Louis Zwerlein's "Kare Killer" was a most unusual place. One had to get there by boat since it was built on a floating barge anchored out in the bay. One of its side attractions was that it afforded a fine view of the approaching boats from shore. On occasion, a husband sighting his wife on a course for the barge would dive headlong off the far side and strike out for Great Neck. When prohibition killed the Kare Killer in 1916, the business moved to a spot adjacent to the Town Dock, renting boats, selling chowder and other seafood. Another move in the early thirties placed the restaurant in its present location still on the Main Street waterfront. In 1954, it was expanded into an adjoining building that had originally been a blacksmith shop.

Amazing view, but overall experience was just Ok...

Louie's is a gem, location-wise and the view is amazing, but when the restaurant is crowded (happens often), though I always make reservation ahead, it takes a long time for them to set up the table and the service can be extremely slow. The food is either very good or not good at all and we have... read more

I love Louie's, especially in the summer. The oysters are always a treat, the menu is varied and interesting, and the food doesn't disappoint. Service is generally very good as well. Try to get there for sunset - it's a wonderful view.

I can't understand the negative reviews about this place. My friends who live in New York go here on a regular basis, so all four of us went for dinner here 3 days ago. My comments are positive on all fronts. We also found the staff very friendly & helpful, especially in respect of the wine. I ordered the special... More

Since we live 10 minutes away and this place had been a long time favorite of ours, we had continued coming back despite recent disappointments. Mostly because we had hoped there would be some improvement, but our experience has only kept worsening…I don’t know where the owners are, or if they even care, but having owned our own restaurant for... This was a return down memory lane to a place that I have gone to some 45 years ago. The restaurant located next to Manhasset Bay has a great location, their own parking lot as well and most of all great food. THey also have some very strong Sour Tomato Bloody Mary's containing some sweet pepper . After a small... More

I live close by so Louie's so it's an easy go-to place for a drink or meal overlooking Manhasset Bay and has amazing sunsets all summer long. Unfortunately the food is hit or miss... I'd say on average the food is good or very good, but 30% of the time it's only ok. Like the food, the service is also... More

I keep coming back because of location to work. Food is not top notch seafood you would expect for a 'seafood restaurant'. Staff is boy d to fail if they are not trained.

Living in Port Washington, we know how busy Louie's is from springtime through fall.....great outdoor space with a terrific view! We choose to go to Louie's during the wintertime, especially for Sunday brunch.......relaxing to enjoy a midday meal while looking out at Manhasset Bay. Brunch menu includes a choice of a Bellini, Bloody Mary or Mimosa! The wait staff is... More

We had striped bass cooked to perfection. You rarely see striped bass on a menu. We were there in winter so couldn't eat outside, but I can imagine the outside seating would be great in summer. The atmosphere inside was great, the service good and they have a good selection of craft beers and wine. Not inexpensive, but worth it.

I used to live in Port Washington, New York and my parents favorite restaurant was Louie's Oyster Bar and Grill. So, 10 years later, me and the wife naturally decided that this would be a great place for our anniversary, even though there were rumors that Louies was going downhill. The rumors were right and I couldn't have been more... More
