Good, trying to be Southern food

Maxie's is a solid place. Some menu items are better than others, and some deliver Southernness better as well. First off, the environment here is relaxed, the patio wonderful in summer, and the service excellent. Maxie's also has a full bar with both local and regional beers on draught. The food... read more

So nice, we went there twice while attending the Grassroots Festival. Excellent variety of craft cocktails and beers on tap. They serve dinner until 11 pm (and they mean it--that's how we ended up there the second time). Excellent New Orleans themed menu--loved the gumbo, jambalaya and seafood. Having just spent over a week in the French Quarter this tastes... More

What a fun treat! While visiting Ithaca for our one year anniversary, we decided on Maxie's Supper Club to try the creole style food and oysters. The raw bar sampler was fresh and had just a hint of BBQ seasoning on the shrimp in keeping with their culinary theme. We weren't in a rush to order our entrees with the... More

Had "dinner" Friday night at Stonecat in Hector (see separate review) and it was terrible. Saturday night Maxie's did a great job of making a party of four happy. Great food, excellent variety, friendly helpful service and calm relaxed atmosphere. Try anything and you will not be disappointed. Corn and crab chowder always a good way to start. Good assortment... More

Maxie's is one of my favorite go-to places. When it's raining, their bright and fresh menu choices make moods change for the better! The New Orleans flavors are a really fun pairing with live music that can be found regularly. Maxie's has evolved into an institution for great reasons. Plus, I would shrivel up and die without their oysters!

Food was great, but Tuesday had live music, and we were there as a group to socialize. It was really difficult to have conversations (much better when the music took a break). Server was very knowledgeable. Parking is difficult, but you can stop in to get a map from the host as to where to park (other than next to... More

This is a place that everyone seems to enjoy just as soon as they sit down. The wait staff is one of the best in the area: they all seem to like their job and know their place has it's own niche. The food is very good, there specials are special. Something about this place in downtown Ithaca says to... More

Our first visit to Maxie's was on a busy Friday night. It's a lively place with a varied menu of New Orleans flavor. The food was good! The shrimp and grits delicious with a nice spice. Also we enjoyed a vegetarian gumbo (and what a huge portion it was), and a nice salad and soup. Nice collection of beers and... More

Based on cost performance criteria, the food and ambiance here is 2 1/2 stars. I had gumbo or what they called gumbo. Not good at all. I own quite a selection of cookbooks with great gumbo recipes that I like to cook from and having experienced some of the best in New Orleans, this place needs work. But, it is... More

We went for a team dinner. I ordered a French Quarter cocktail, which was very good. In appetizers we ordered crab cakes for the table along with some shrimp both of which were excellent, I shared a full pork meal, which had pulled pork and ribs with rice and bean along with fish and chips. The pulled pork was decent... More
