The Bronx version of Cape Cod

I've always wanted to check out City Island, and I knew this restaurant is legendary. So we drove over there last week and got some fried clams and smelts. The place is kind of amusing, in a busy, loud and grubby kind of way. It's quite an operation: you go to counter, shout at one of the many... read more

Shared fried shrimp and fried calamari with husband and three grandsons. Tasteless! The six year old tasted a french fry, made a face and tossed it. I did not enjoy the lemonade. Husband said it was probably a powder mix. The nine year old commented on the condition of the rest room. He washed his hands, but didn't want to... More

Yesterday we spent the afternoon on City Island and after looking at different restaurant menus decided to go to the famous Johnny's Reef Restaurant that is situated at the very end of City Island. Their fried seafood was tasty but not exceptional but this isn't a place that people go to for fine cuisine, however the views are great and... More

My family and I went for an early dinner after spending the day at the Bronx Zoo. I last came over 20 years ago; my husband and kids had never been here before. Johnny's is not like going to a restaurant, sitting down and ordering from a waitress. Johnny's is more like a combination of a a food court at... More

Mediocre fried seafood, at best. The fresh shucked clams were surprisingly good - and at $12 for a dozen an excellent value. Large outdoor space is nice, right on the water. Its a City Island Tradition but its not very good food. Lots of people love to keep coming back for the fried fish, shell fish, etc. The fries are... More

This is one of the staple restaurants in City Island. You can't go wrong with the fried shrimp and French fries basket. One of my favorite places to go to in the summer.

At the tip end of City Island, this always-crowded, rustic eatery specializes in very fresh seafood in big portions and low prices. The food is sold in separate sections against a long wall, starting with soft drinks, then fried fish and seafood, raw bar, salads, other dishes, condiments, and alcohol. It takes some strategizing to get your meal together. Recommend... More

The food is very low priced for the amount of food you receive. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor seats especially during non-crowded times. However, they only accept cash. Thankfully, my friends were able to cover my meal and I later paid them back.

If you are looking for a no-frills, quick, tasty and filling meal, this is your place. We tried the fried shrimp, fried scallops and chicken tenders. Very good. It's very crowded, but there was no line. Lots of seating indoors and out. This is cafeteria style ordering and seating, but perfect if you are wanting some good food without the... More

My wife grew up in the Bronx and when we went to NYC, she said we had to go to City Island. I had never heard of the place but I was game. She took me to Johnny's for the fried lobster and shrimp and it was awesome! Well worth the train and the bus ride to get there.
