Yum!

If you are looking for a no-frills, quick, tasty and filling meal, this is your place. We tried the fried shrimp, fried scallops and chicken tenders. Very good. It's very crowded, but there was no line. Lots of seating indoors and out. This is cafeteria style ordering and seating, but perfect... read more

My wife grew up in the Bronx and when we went to NYC, she said we had to go to City Island. I had never heard of the place but I was game. She took me to Johnny's for the fried lobster and shrimp and it was awesome! Well worth the train and the bus ride to get there.

It's gritty, it's simple, it's unpretentious—and it's a relic. Most of all, however, it's good. After 65 years of dishing up tasty fried grub, Johnny's Reef, continues to draw hungry seafarers as well as landlubbers to the southern tip of City Island. On my visits, I usually head straight to station 4 in the fry section. Though the shrimp are... More

I've always said this place reminds me of my high school lunchroom only more delicious. You have all types of seafood as well as ribs, chicken, burgers. Colder months I go for the clam chowder, red or white. While most have their seafood fried, you also have the steamed option with seasoning. Simple food, order as you eat. Steamed is... More

One of my favorite spots when I am in a rush. Sad to say the past few times I have been disappointed. The food tasted soggy like it was sitting around for awhile. Will try again when its warmer because I am NOT a seafood city fan.

Do yourself a favour stay away on weekends; it's a madhouse. During the week you'll avoid the maddening crowds, traffic and the food really is more tasty.

At the far end of City Island, a fried fish dining hall with outside seating. You get your food yourself (no table service) and eat either inside (absolutely no decor) or outside. Fried fish was good, white Clam Chowder was pretty bland. Butter/garlic shrimp were ok. The food was absolutely ok - if you don't mind the "factory canteen" look... More

I love this place my mom told me she has been coming here since she moved from S.C. to NY as a child. I remember my family bringing me here and sitting on the benches and enjoying the views. Now as an adult i bring them and enjoy the same service and great food.... It’s so good we travel all... More

We came after a perfect evening sail and had three platters: fried scallops, fried shrimp, and fried fish filet. Each was simply fried and totally fresh. Not at all greasy, very lightly breaded - truly perfect simple fried seafood. Together, the three platters cost $42 including a mound of French fries we couldn't come close to finishing, and a tiny... More

I ate at Reef's last night... and I lost sleep from anxiety to write this review. If you read any of my reviews here and Yelp, it's truthful and accurate. I was there with my mom and 2 cousins. I ordered the fried scallops. When I looked for the cole slaw, it was buried under the French fries and scallops.... More
