My husband and I both ordered the sauerbraten. It came with a dumpling, red cabbage and salad. The salad arrived limp and saturated with dressing. The red cabbage, dumpling and sauerbraten were all lacking in taste. Specifically, the meal did not have the zest or tang that sauerbraten and red cabbage should have. Each item was singularly bland. The meat... More

I grew up in a very German family and was fed on my Grandmothers and Aunt's old German recipes. And I spent many, many trips to various parts of Germany. I finally gave in and ventured to this restaurant. It was the worst German food that I ever had. There are a few good German restaurants left, and this is... More

If you want to experience authentic, homemade German food, just like your mother or oma made, look no further - the Oak Chalet has it. I have been going to the Oak Chalet for the last 10 years since moving to Wantagh. I have never had a bad meal or bad service. Everything is homemade, down to their bread. The... More

Went to this place Mothers day for a 3:30pm seating.. We were seated promptly and withing 10 minutes, there were no empty chairs. Staff was friendly and considering it was a holiday crowd, service was good. We had various appetizers and had Jaegerschnitzel and Sauerbraten.. Included was a salad, vegetables and dumplings. For dessert we tried the black forest cake... More

This cozy restaurant is located just north of the Long Island Railroad in Bellmore. N.Y. Owners used to own a very large German establishment known as the Sunrise Village many years ago on the Sunrise Hwy. That restaurant dates back to the 1920's. Food here is always fresh hot and delicious. Daily specials include seafood and other American delights, but... More

Ten of us went to Oak Chalet to celebrate a birthday. It had been a couple of years since we ate here. And frankly this experience will ensure that I go back in the near future. The food and the service were top notch. Our party consumed, goulash, pork, herring, pea soup, and the most beautiful peach melba you will... More

It's a family run, family owned restaurant with an incredible amount of old world European charm. The people are friendly and efficient. The food was great: substantial and hearty. The black Forrest cake and apple dessert are both homemade and worth every calorie.

I lived in Germany for 5 years and I know German food very well. The wiener schnitzel was bland. The jaeger schnitzel was just as bland with a white slightly creamy canned mushroom gravy. The roulade was dry. The dumpling was doughy, The red cabbage was from a jar. Hey but the European salad was good. Everything was edible but... More

Our party of 12 went for the 8:00 seating on New Year's Eve. Although we had to wait about 20 minutes until a large table was available, we were not rushed out to make room for the 10:00 reservations. As always, food and service were very good. A roast pork special was tender and moist, and both Weiner- and Jaegerschnitzels... More
