Description: Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

We were looking for a place for lunch in Barrydale after driving for hours on the Route 62. We must admit that we felt very disappointed by the town itself: the city centre made us feel extremely miserable and we wondered whether we shouldn't proceed and look for a different place. However we were too hungry to drive any further... More

On route to Jeffreys Bay, this is a must stop-over on the R62. Friendly staff and quality food. The owner's personal care made it an exceptional experience, the cheese cake is a must!! Thank you Hannette, Anika and Danel

We called at Barrydale as coffee break on the way to Montague. Could not find an open restaurant so followed the signs to the blue cow. Well on arriving you may be put of as it didn't look appealing for us. But, since it was raining - yes they do get rain in S Africa :( - we went in.... More

As a vegetarian I'm a little tired of pasta and potato wedges. On a hot summer's day, at the Blue Cow, I had a great salad and delicious health bread served with butter and marmalade, washed down with milkshake and a tall jar of iced water. The little details - salad dressing, artistic plating of food, extra ice, queries about... More

If your journey along route 62 takes you anywhere near Barrydale make sure you stop off at this delightful little cafe. Rather ambitiously advertised as being 'on the waterfront at Barrydale' it nevertheless overlooks a lovely pond with voracious catfish and ducks and weaverbirds adding to the entertainment. We only stopped for coffee but The Blue Cow made for a... More

Great little gem of a place, with good coffee, great milkshakes, yummy cakes (you can order half portions!) and a great view. The kids were even given some bread for feeding the ducks. Also loved the little book exchange right next door. Pity the playground equipment was in disrepair, as this always makes a big difference for the kids.
