Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

Quirky coffee shop - don't drive by, it is really worth the stop!

I loved the quirky sense of humour. The service was great, the cheesecake and coffee excellent, and the stencilled icing sugar cow on the serving plate added a flourishing finishing touch! There is a lovely view from the deck of distant mountains and the weavers were building their nests on the branches of an overhanging tree which was hugely entertaining!... More

I actually got lost looking for another place and ended up at The Blue Cow which I didn't regret at all. Sitting at Barrydale's waterfront, enjoying a salad and a still-warm homemade apple crumble pie, life doesn't get much better. Hidden away but definitely worth getting lost.

We just stopped for a cup of coffee, I had lemon meringue and my husband a scone, both were very good. The staff are very helpful and friendly, definitely a good stop

Situated next to a peaceful dam (the waterfront) with a view over the mountains and farmlands, this is the perfect setting. Although right in town, it is on the edge and you feel you have the place to yourself regarding peace and quiet. Ever heard of a savoury cheesecake? Me neither! Just don't make the mistake of not trying it... More

We were treated to a visit here by my parents who had been before in a previous holiday. And it most definitely was a treat. A fantastic place overlooking a huge, beautiful fish filled pond with mountain views. Hannette was the perfect hostess and the tea and scones was literally the best we have ever tasted. Perfect visit, perfect venue,... More

After my first visit to The Blue Cow, I deliberately planned to visit again. As much as Barrydale's Waterfront provides refreshment to the hasty traveller, the atmosphere is best enjoyed with time to spare. It occupies a spot at the edge of town, away from the hustle found next to the R62, I will visit again.

Great coffee and we had some tasty cheesecake. All served by friendly staff. And you get to feed some big fish! Well worth a visit if you fancy a coffee.
