Description: Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

Very friendly, efficient service, very tasty fare. The setting is very relaxing, the birds and the fish all love the bread which is given to share with them. bird watchers paradise.

We were staying in the Grootvaderbosch Nature Reserve, but the weather was lousy so we paid a visit to Barrydale up the Tradouw Pass and saw a sign "Blue Cow coffee shop on the Waterfront" It was pouring with rain and the Afrikaans owner had the door open for us ready with blankets to put round us !! They had... More

We stopped at The Blue Cow for an afternoon tea break while driving from Hermanus to Oudtshoorn. We were seated outside and the owner chatted with us while a staff member handed us each a slice of wheat bread. We weren't sure whether we were to eat the bread, so we both tentatively took bites, at which point the owner... More

Our 2nd visit (or maybe even 3rd) to The Blue Cow where - even though it was a nippy winters day - we chose to sit outside on the deck. We watched the fish (see photo) until our lovely toasted sandwiches and coffees arrived.

We were frozen after a very uncomfortable night without light or heating in a Barrydale home. Were were directed to the Blue Cow but when we saw it we could not believe it was a restaurant! "Go in and see if it's clean and warm" said my wife as she remained sitting in the car. I opened the door to... More

The off the beaten track yet so quaint spot is a lovely space for the family. The kids loved feeding the fish and watching the birds while on the deck. The staff were very friendly! The breakfast was well...a breakfast but the cheesecake was amazing!! Definitely the best I have ever had. We are glad we decided to pop in... More

We chanced upon this little business due to its quirky self-promotion around Barrydale and were not disappointed. Besides decent food, and (if you are lucky enough to be served by the owner) hospitable service, there is an excellent shop included. A memorable visit to an interesting enterprise. Recommended.

It is the warm welcome and the hospitality of the owner that makes this place so special. This was our 4th visit and we always look forwards to stopping here for lunch to enjoy the delightful home made food and relaxing on the deck looking at the views. A perfect stop to break up a journey.

Really disappointed. Such a great location and concept, but the food was terrible. There was a hair...a really massive one...at the bottom of an olive bowl (unfortunately only visible as I popped the second to last olive in my mouth), the spinach quiche was soggy and the coffee tasted as though they had reused the grounds. We skipped desert, hurried... More

We arrived in Barrydale after driving for 2 1/2 hrs feeling hungry and needing a place to relax for lunch. Drove through town and stumbled across the Blue Cow. Absolutely lovely. Delicious quiche and coffee plus interesting information written on the menu about Hannette's ancestory. Do not miss if you are in the area.
