Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

Great stop off

A nice place to stop and have some lunch and coffee. The owner is lovely and loves to talk, which is a good thing. Ice coffee was perfect

Stopped for coffee and dessert one morning while driving through the Karoo. Lovely little restaurant, very picturesque, friendly owner knowledgeable about local wineries.

Beautiful spot and worth finding as it's not far from route 62. We had delicious cake and coffee, great service and the owner was very friendly and helpful. All in all a great place not to be missed.

What a great stopover the Blue Cow is. Away from the (busy and touristic) restaurants on the R62. Great for the children as they are handed some bread to feed the fish - The coffee and cake are great. The staff is very friendly. Also visit the little bookshop next to the blue Cow.

We stopped here for coffee recently and what a good decision that was. The plunger coffee is excellent. We also had the homemade cheesecake which was first rate. Just follow the signs off R62 and you'll find its a lovely spot by a fish pond. We sat outside watching the birds and looking at the lovely view. Staff are lovely... More

I just wanted to pull off 62 to have a drink and some phone reception. I was glad I did. They close at 5pm and I rolled in at 4:40 and sucked down a milkshake and cheese cake. Fed the fish and ducks for free, too. The owner is awesome.

Rarely do you combine entertainment with great food for lunch, but feeding the carp on the 'waterfront' was huge fun as was photographing the other wildlife. An imaginative menu delivered delights for all. A great lunchtime experience.

Very nice setting on the Barrydale "waterfront" (a farm dam with lots of carp, koi and ducks) and charming ambience. Service very friendly. Food was a bit disappointing though... toasted sandwiches made with commercial sliced bread instead of freshly baked bread and fruit smoothie wasn't very fruity at all. It having a farm stall vibe I expected more fresh homemade... More

What a lovely place to break a long road trip! Absolutely stunning scenery, friendly helpful staff, excellent value for money and delicious food. I even had the opportunity of feeding the fish and ducks. Will definitely stop there again.
