Nestled at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains on the farm Tradouwshoek of Boetie & Hannette Cooke. Well known for spectacular views, bird watching, healthy country climate and unforgettable meals. The Blue Cow established in 2005 and takes pride in serving the best farm food available. Impressum Six generations ago Robert Cooke, a farm worker near Dublin in Ireland fell in love with a landowner's daughter, Mary-anne Proudfoot They were forbidden to marry because of the class difference so, undeterred, they jumped aboard a ship to Cape Town and then took an ox-wagon to Swellendam In 1890 the Cooke family ended up with the farm in Barrydale where they have been farming dairy and fruit ever since. Boetie and Hannette Cooke continued farming in the family tradition and brought up their children Bertus, Anika and Danel on the farm. About eight years ago Hannette had an idea. She told Boetie what she wanted to do and in true male tradition he told her it was a silly idea and wouldn't work. It took Hannette two years of female guile to convince Boetie that a restaurant in the "calf paddock by the dam" on the farm would be a good idea. And a great idea it was... The Blue Cow was born.

We stopped at The Blue Cow halfway through a 300mile drive to Stellenbosch. I was so distracted by the good coffee and amazing lemon meringue pie that I left my bag with everything I had of value under the table and drove off. 150 miles later when we realised the Blue Cow team had already found my bag, and gone... A very nice small restaurant situated in Barrydale with a pond full of carpers. Friendly service. Good coffee and excellent homemade cheesecake. If you have the time do stop for a break.

Stumbled on this great cafe while touring through the mountains. Lovely food at side of small lake watching the yellow plovers in and out of their nests. Thoroughly recommend this cafe

This is such a great spot - one of my favorite coffee shops in the whole country! Hanette the owner is usually there with the friendliest welcome. Coffee delicious - I had plunger coffee. We also shared the most delicious cheesecake. Great view over the Barrydale countryside and the 'Barrydale Waterfront' - the farm dam! Each visitor gets a couple... More

We bumped into Hannette in Barrydale looking for sunglasses, since mine broke during our trip. Adding to that: after a week long journey traveling on several gravel roads our car was in a desperate need of a car wash. Then, we accidentally bumped into Hannette and this lady solved all our immediate problems. You are a shining example of kindness.... More

We came off the main road which is brimming with restaurants full of coach parties to find this gem of a place. Called in at 11ish for coffe and had coffee, Earl Grey tea and fresh from the oven Apple pie. Sat on the decking, overlooking a lake with Carp being fed and watched the Weaver birds from 6 ft... The setting is beautiful and rustic. The salmon breakfast is brilliant and the farmers breakfast adequate. The view over the farmlands is peaceful and relaxing. Wonderful owner bubbling over with a love for Barrydale.
