Good value

Have eaten here often over the years. Good service and value. Probably the best place to eat in this small town.

Hoping to find one good New Mexican restaurant in Socorro, and tried this one after reading Tripadvisor reviews, but never again! The chicken enchiladas may have been the worst west of the Mississippi, the sopapillas tasted like sugared cardboard, the waiter was unbelievably obnoxious, and the recorded mood music was far too loud.

After a long travel day, we were looking for a low key restaurant with authentic local food. The clerk at our hotel recommended El Sombrero. The atmosphere is rather low key but charming. The food was good with generous portions and reasonable prices. Everyone in our party had something different-combo platter, chili rellenos, nachos, vegetarian burrito. The veggie burrito was... The rear room was colorfully decorated and had a fountain in the middle. The food was good but when I asked for a Margarita I was told that their's was made with wine because they only serve beer and wine.

I was staying at the Super 8 across I-25 and went to Frank & Lupe's El Sombrero for dinner. I got there just before closing but the restaurant was still packed. And people came after me, so the posted 9:00pm closing time is really just when they shut the door not when they stop serving. They have the same menu... More

I picked up a friend from the Albuquerque airport, and she suggested we eat here on the way to Truth or Consequences. She really likes this place and eats here regularly, usually during trips to or from the airport. The waitress asked us if we wanted chips and salsa, and my hostess said yes. I'm not sure if they cost... More

Stopped in because it was close to the hotel I was staying at. The service was good. When I arrived my server asked if I wanted chips and salsa. After eating I got the check and was charged for the chips and salsa. She never told me that there was a charge. The steak tacos were average.

First, bear in mind that Socorro is an odd place, not like anywhere else we've ever been (and we've traveled A LOT) but you have to be where the job is, so ... The food, service, prices, cleanliness, friendliness, etc. are dependably OK. We bring our out-of-town guests to the back room, because it's the prettiest in town with lots... More

Ate here Friday night before Trinity Site visit. Greeted and seated promptly. Waitress brought menus and returned with waters. No chips and salsa. Placed or order for chili rellenos and carne asada burrito. Saw other diners with chips and salsa so we asked. They aren't free here. This is the first Mexican restaurant I've been to where even the first... More

The gal at the Chevron station recommended El Sombrero when I asked for a good, locally owned place for lunch. The food was fine but the friendly service and the quiet ambiance (after they turned off the music) inspired us to return. It's been a two week trip full of really bad acoustics in restaurants so a place where we... More
