Tamales!

First visited more than a year ago when Gallup natives suggested it for lunch. Returned this week when El Metate was closed. The approach, via Rte 66 west of town may be daunting. Virgie's is a family restaurant with a "Chinese Massage" studio nearby. Don't be put off. It really is a family place... read more

Our hotel recommended Virgie's Restaurant and I'm glad they did. This is a very homespun place clearly visited by the locals. Most of the choices are Mexican foods. We had fajitas. The corn tortillas were fabulous. The portions were large. The wine was under $5 a glass! There is nothing fancy or contrived about Virgie's which adds to its charm.

Arrived late at our hotel so needed a nice local place to eat. Virgie's was recommended to us. It was excellent food at a very decent price.

Definitely a local hangout. Lots of business at lunch time. Food was good, portions are on the small side. People walking through selling jewelry, pottery, etc. may not appeal to all. They were uniformly quiet and polite.

My wife had beef stew. Lots of big chunks of beef. I had the fajitas. Very good and home made tortillas. It takes courage if your new since there is a porn store on one end of the building the restaurant is in and a message parlor on the other, but it's just a good local restaurant.

One of those places we would have just driven by and never given a thought to, but the hotel staff recommended. Nestled between an adult video store and an oriental massage parlor, not exactly what you would think of for a great little Mexican restaurant. The staff was great, the food was great and reasonably priced.

Vergies was referred to us by the hotel front desk attendant. Small local Mexican Restaurant - food was very good. Staff was super friendly and helpful with the menu. Chicken Enchiladas, Tamales, Green Chiles were excellent! Typical small town, local diner, but with very good food, hit the spot!

Don't get me wrong, I like Sedona and Santa Fe fine, but I love Gallup for it's honesty. If you are really up for a circa-1930s to early-1960's experience, stop overnight (or at least STOP) in Gallup, NM. It will not be perfect, but it will be authentic Route 66. Gallup is not Sedona or Santa Fe, and it wears... More

This place is the worst, if not the worst, its right near the top. Anyone who tells you the food here is good, needs help. Gordon Ramsey would run from this place screaming. The chips are old, the salsa has not flavor and the food we ordered was, well dare I say it, awful! The hotel were we stayed recommended... More
