Certificate of Excellence 2014
Cuisines: European, Continental
Dining options: Breakfast/Brunch, Reservations, Late Night
Description: Nestled in the Trading Post Complex on the corner of Caledon and Myburgh Street is the Restaurant Chez Max serving quality continental fare owned by Candice and Scott Murray since January 2006. Chez Max cuisine, explains Scott, is a mixture of classic and modern with a ‘bit of everything for everyone’. Some of the restaurant’s most popular dishes include The Ultimate Rosti, Veal Specialities, Pork Belly and Seafood. The Chez Max business philosophy is clear and unpretentious – much like the food. “In delivering simplicity,” says Scott. We understand that we must provide the best produce and service within traditional surroundings. A well considered wine list complements the menu and caters to all tastes designed with the flavours of the food in mind and fuelled by a desire to offer wines a cut above the average. Chez Max offers an excellent selection, and the friendly and well-trained staff, all of them who have been there a minimum of 3 years and more, which adds to a culture of community. (What we try to do here is make everyone that comes to Chez Max leave feeling contented and happy with what they have experience, explains Candice.

Had a fabulous meal and evening at Chez Max. Food was delicious and service excellent. I read a previous review about the Chinese food not being good and was quite astounded as Chez max does not serve Chinese. We will definitely return and recommend Chez Max to our friends.

Ate the eggrolls. Awful. Best is the pig ears which are grilled with animal feces and urine. Best with a spicy dipping sauce. Also try the goats milk wine. Wonderful.

Wow! The owner of a restaurant is seldom also the person who takes your order but Candice did just that! We had calamari (very tender) / camembert (crispy) for starters, chicken curry (flavourful and not too hot) / pork belly (very tender and tasty) as mains and finished off with crème brûlée (oops! slightly too black..) / and Lindt parfait... The restaurant atmosphere is a little cold--high ceilings and art for sale on the walls; but the hostess couldn't be warmer and more friendly. Her husband is the chef and he elevated a pork belly to something beautiful. The top was crisp but detached from the rich pork underneath so you could eat as much or little of that part.... More

Once again Chez Max came up trumps. We were a group of 25 and had booked for lunch. The food was excellent, well presented and the service unobtrusive. This restaurant is really a gem. Candace and her team are quick and efficient. Thank you all so much!

I recently went to Chez Max for dinner with friends and family to celebrate my birthday and what an excellent evening it was!! The food was delicious, the service excellent and with free corkage during the winter months what more do you need! I just wish I discovered it earlier. I will definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a... More

we are regulars and as such quite spoiled. While the menu does not change very much except for seasonal adjustments, the quality which Scott produces every time is truly astounding. Indeed we have our favs of calamari starters, pork belly and Wiener Schnitzel or calves liver as mains , but everything else we tried we could happily say that we... More

This remains our favourite restaurant in the western cape - year in and out! Special at Christmas, for birthdays or making any other evening special. You have to experience this warm Candice and Scott magic for yourself - we have for years.

As a chef I am often disappointed when I go to a restaurant for dinner. Not so at Chez Max. My mother and I visited last Saturday evening and had a wonderful dining experience. Hostess and co-owner,Candice, was super friendly and efficient, making us feel instantly welcome and at home. The service was friendly, informative and quick. The wines on... More
