Extravagant

This is the type of place which is worth spending a great deal of money on once in a while. They offer eight courses of food which you won't find nearly anywhere else, matched with wines and other drinks. It isn't cheap, but it is worth the extravagance

Maybe it's just our American pallet but having lived in NY for several years we have eaten at lots of the staples and lots of more interesting casual places in addition to places throughout Europe and Asia, etc. This restaurant however was unfortunate. Upon arrival we received a complimentary bubbly which we loved. After that we had multiple dishes that... More

The meal at The Tasting Room in Franschhoek was my birthday present to myself, and it lived up to every expectation I had. We went for the African Surprise menu with wine pairing and every dish in the eight course offering was, indeed, a surprise. From the bewildering appetizers, through to the "Paternoster" beach, from the Buchu sorbet to the... More

This is the place where you just have to give yourself over to the experience and suspend all conventional expectations. The food is highly engineered and manipulated with the result that nothing looks like what it is and much of it doesn't taste like what it is. It is creative, energetic, bizarre and fun. Unfortunately, what it is not is... More

I can't believe I'm writing this but honesty is the only policy on TA. Coming towards the end of our three weeks in ZA perhaps we were just "foodied" out, but it pains me to report that we found the Tasting Room menu a little too fussy. Not only do you get something like 10 undocumented courses, but they are... More

Managed to get a table last minute. Definitely worth it. All the courses were unique and tasted great (get the wine pairing). Reminded me more of a relaxed Noma or Alinea. Service was first rate but relaxed and very engaging (funny). If you aren't staying at the hotel (we didn't) have a drink in the hotel bar - funky and... More

It difficult to put everything in our experience into a few words. It was an phenomenal evening. Service was prompt, food adventurous and very well presented. Staff well trained and enthusiastic. We thought about which if our friends we are bringing with next time.

I dined in the Tasting Room in August 2014. On returning to Franschhoek I again dined there. Since my first visit the world renowned Executive Chef Margot Janse had revamped the menu. Still an experience not easily forgotten. Great food, well prepared using many local foods. Service was excellent, and some of the staff even remembered my previous visit. Don't... More

My husband and I went to The Tasting Room for our second anniversary. It was difficult to get a table but luckily being persistent paid off and it was definitely worth it. It's supposed to be an eight course tasting menu but they add in a few more little tasters along the way so it feels like many more courses... More
