Only sushi worth eating in the region

Year after year, Ike makes the best sushi certainly in this part of New Jersey. Fish is fresh, sushi, sashimi, and rolls are high quality fish, and other cooked items are good too. It's more expensive that all the other sushi restaurants but it has to be to maintain this quality.

I don't know why Ike won't move from this dreary spot with sad bathrooms, a cold hallway entrance and no parking. He's been here for so long I hope he owns the place, or has a $1 a year lease. Once inside, 'tho, and you're in a shrine to great food and a Japanese way of doing things. Pictures of... More

First of all this place is difficult to find if you go for the first time. I would have given up finding the place if I went there by myself. I had new ramen. I think the soup base is well balanced. Not much smell. Very good taste. Not salty, but not weak taste. Maybe a bit of from traditional... More

This place has a non-descript exterior on a side street in downtown Somerville, tucked behind a big Mexican restaurant. The sushi is good, but not sure it is the best in NJ. The reason I came here is that it is the only Japanese restaurant I know of in this part of central Jersey that serves authentic ramen. It is... More

I've had sushi in many different restaurants in different cities and this is by far the best. The fish is fresh, and the variety of types available is more than other places I've been to. Chef Ike prepares the rice masterfully, and the fish melts in your mouth. This quiet, tucked away restaurant is a hidden jewel.

I recently went to Shumi in Somerville with a group of friends, half of whom are Japanese. The other half have lived in Japan. The restaurant serves authentic Japanese food from a real Japanese chef. You can't get any better than that. The owner came to our table to discuss the various fresh sushi options that he could create with... More

We have eaten sushi around the country and there is none better than what is offered at Shumi! The surroundings are a little run down but the food is unmatched. Expect higher prices than other NJ sushi bars but you will pay half of what you would in NYC and the quality of the food will be better! Sit at... More

Your first instinct at the door is that you found a hole in the wall. Its going to be authentic and well worth it. Dozens of Zagat ratings displayed on the wall. Once you get your order, reality will set in. Its a gimmick!! My husband ordered Teriaki. His dish came sizzling but all that was under one medium size... More

This small restaurant has stood the test of time! I have been eating he for over 10 years. The owner chef is focused on delivering the best fish in a pleasant environment. It's location in the back of what is euphemistically called "an indoor office mall" may be difficult to find the first time but his loyal following has its... More

As this is probably the best sushi in NJ, I still go by at least once a year, even though I have moved away from the area and it is a long drive. Chef Ike noted that I look very serious when I eat his sushi, especially his hand rolls. I told him that I want to savor every bite.... More
