pricy and a bit pretentions

This is an attractive old restaurant hanging on in the center of Newark, and the city desperately needs a place like this. They have a nice little bar which is very affordable during happy hour. The restaurant serves an attractively presented dinner. We ordered the duck, which was quite good... read more

The Maize Restaurant is situated in the lobby of the Best Western Plus Robert Treat hotel. This restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere and super good food. It is the place to come for a casual dinner or to host any special type of function. We have been to this restaurant on several occasions on our way to and from the... More

Went there before a show at NJPAC. First the good news: stylish, pretty place, nice bar, great proximity to the theater. Now, for the not so good: restaurant only offers a prix fixe although this is not clear on the website. The website has both a dinner and a pf menu. Pretty pricey at $45 per. None of us wanted... We ate dinner at Maize while staying at the Robert Treat Hotel. The food and service were good. I had the avocado crab roll appetizer and asparagus soup. The soup was good but the appetizer was a disappointment. Serving was very small and couldn't see any avocado. My daughter ordered the calamari appetizer. Her serving was large and the calamari... This is a very nice place to relax and have a drink before attending the NJPAC (just across the street) The drink and food are a bit expensive, but the atmosphere and location make it worthwhile for a special night

The bar is good. Nice and quick service. The food is good too although the lobster was overcooked. The steak was excellent. Service was great. A nice place to go, especially for a large group of pople. Just don't stay at the hotel it's attached to as it's awful....

Seven of us had a dinner Sunday evening before meetings the following day as some of us were staying in the Robert Treat Hotel where Maize is located. The service was quite good (although there weren't many diners that evening). The mussels, which two of us had, were just OK, but the steak was excellent. The wine list had some... More

I eat out a lot and if a place has a bad day, it happens. This place is so hyped up online, with superlatives ("fine dining" and "dazzling" and "exciting", etc.) that we actually booked the hotel where it's located (the Best Western Plus Robert Treat) because of the description of the restaurant within. It sounded so good. In reality,... More

Located inside the Best Western Hotel. We dined at Maize before a theatre performance at NJPAC. The restaurant's location provides great access to NJPAC. Parking is easy to. Upon arrival, on Saturday night, dining hall had many available tables (we reserved to be sure) and we had a choice and were promptly seated. Service was attentive but not intrusive. Varied... More
