Sushi and Jazz Thursday Nights

I've been to Hotoke several times but was there recently to have dinner and hear jazz. The New Brunswick Jazz Project has moved their weekly Thursday night jazz shows here. It mostly works. The volume in the restaurant was a little higher than I would have liked but was ok. The lounge area fills up... read more

Met a friend for an early dinner on Monday, March 24. To my surprise, the service was terrible and the place was empty. We had to ask to have our water glasses refilled several times and our plates were not promptly removed. I had the Miso Salmon and it was just ok. I ordered the fondue dessert and it was... More

The good: the food is genuinely fusion with a tinge of creativity. Often a time the trendy word 'fusion' is randomly applied to ordinary Asian cuisine restaurants. Hotoke serves really 'fused' dishes. Our seaweed salad was prepared with addition of onions and radishes, etc. The Fillet Mignon main course was prepared to perfection, with interesting sides and amazing aroma. The... More

Three of us went for dinner last month before a show at the State Theatre. The decor and design is very cool but that's where the positives end. The food was bad, baby food bad, and the service was so slow. The waiter didn't even clear our plates when we asked for the check. I wouldn't be surprised if they... More

We were going to a play at the George Street Playhouse and a few people recommended this restaurant. The restaurant interior is very pretty with even a small second floor. We started with a couple of martinis; my wife had the mango and I had the pomegranate. Both were very rich in color and superbly made. We then both had... More

The place was not crowded and many servers who had little to do.The food was OK, asian style, I had Tuna sushi wich was too heavy, taste dominated by sticky rice. The salmon was OK but the best was the rice with vegetables wich came with the salmon.

....as the term can mean Enlightened (as in Buddha), or it can also mean dead... I am happy to report that the state of this Hotoke was most-certainly in line with the former and supporting of the giant Buddha statue that is situated and presiding over the main dining area. My sister and I had just enjoyed a concert at... More

Okay - I have been to this restaurant several times and I have to say they have very good (to great) sushi for reasonable prices. They have the best seaweed salad I have ever had (and I eat Japanese all over the world). This evening I only had some tuna sashimi and some uni but the uni was amazing. For... More

Came hare a month ago after not having been to the area in several years. Great to see that this place is still happening. The night scene is great with a good DJ spinning music. In the past they used to charge a cover, but that's seemed to have stopped. The ambiance is great. New Brunswick needs more places like... More

After our first visit made us think it was too expensive and too attuned to drinkers rather than eaters, we have had some very good meals here. The sushi is very fresh and the food above average in quality, presentation and novelty.
