So happy to see that Matisse was able to relocate close by after Sandy. They took over an existing space and kept it the way it was, so I do miss the bright and airy atmosphere over their boardwalk, nautical home. The food was good, but lack luster salad and crab cakes. Short ribs were excellent, Our server was pleasant,... More

I went for a birthday dinner with a very large group. The waitress, Cynthia, was rude and not good at her job. We tried to order appetizers for 11 people and she was wrong on the serving size. The shrimp appetizer gave the four people who got to eat it an upset stomach for the rest of the night. The... More

We are not ones (my wife and I) to write a negative review of an independent restaurant, however we are disappointed enough to do that in this case. We will start with the two positives; one, while not exceptional, the sauce in the clam and pasta dish was good and the Caesar salad was not bad. Also, the atmosphere was... More

The original Matisse, on the boardwalk in Belmar, New Jersey, went out to sea in Superstorm Sandy. It has now been reincarnated at 10th Avenue and Main Street, still in Belmar, and is just as good as it was before the storm. While the physical plant is somewhat different, it is still pleasant, if a bit louder, due to the... More

The atmosphere and service is very good, but for the prices the quality of the food needs to be much better or, make it more basic and give you more. What we received was NYC prices for small average dishes. Probably a 6/10. BYOB is a bonus.

Restaurant now at 1000 Main St., Belmar. It is BYO which we like. Three of us went because food at prior site was good. The busboy brought one wrong appetizer so one person had to wait while 2 started. The roasted Manila clams appetizer was uninspired and tasteless. The Atlantic Clam Chowder was uninspired. The PEI mussels with sweet chilis,... More

They just open recently for dinners and we were anxious to try it on a Saturday night and it was their first Saturday night for dinner. Both our dinners were terrible. The salmon was over cooked and my husbands ribs were mostly fat. The service was excellent and they didn't charge us for our dinner which was nice but we... More

Just read the most recent reviews (please note that my rating above is for the previous establishment) and still can't understand how anyone could have been less than impressed by the "old" Matisse; we never had anything but pleasant experiences with the food and staff. Be that as it may... I was just e-mailed a photo of the "Grand Opening... More

Matisse is no longer in business. They were wiped out by Sandy. It was one of my favorite restaurants in Belmar.

Matisse was a victim of hurricane Sandy. The entire building is gone. No loss. The establishment was arrogant. They acted like they were doing you a favor. The portions were small and nothing special. The view of the ocean is spectacular, but does not make up for the restaurant experience.
