We went with a party of 6 and even though some were late, they accommodated our needs to perfection. We spent nearly $500 including a nice bottle of wine. A touch on the high side for Portsmouth but worth it. The Bistro is located in a historic building near the waterfront but offers limited view and it is on the... More

My wife and I spent a day in Porstmouth in October. We made reservations at Black Trumpet. Quaint little place, good food, good wine. Service was hit and miss but very enthusiastic and nice. Maybe just a little more polish for servers...of course we were on the second floor near the bar, maybe service is better downstairs. Would recommend and... More

This is supposed to be a special restaurant so my husband chose this for our tenth anniversary. The waiter was attentive and the wine was good (and expensive) but that's about all I can give a positive review. We had a mediocre appetizer: the chefs Meze plate. It had squid and I don't remember what else. I've tasted better when... More

The food here is extraordinary. The first "small plate" was octopus with black olives, tender and delicious. Second, an intense smoked tomato soup with little dots of goat cheese: amazing. First medium plate: lobster croquettes, delicious airy morsels with a little spike of heat at the end. This heat was also true of the squid stew, tasty with a bit... More

Our friend close this restaurant to have her wedding. They have the ceremony upstair and dinner on the ground floor. It is such a nice place for small event. Staff are friendly. Food and wine were great.

We walked in with no reservation and were well served. We tried a little bit of everything and the staff was very helpful with recommendations. Would highly recommend going back, we only saw the downstairs, but enjoyed the atmosphere and decor.

The Black Trumpet is best described as a bistro. The ambiance is quaint (e.g. copper sheet table tops) and almost seedy (e.g. located on a street that is essentially an alley). The menu is somewhat limited. However the service was prompt and the food was excellent. Recommended for a "different" but rewarding dining experience.

In a town just packed with great restaurants, this was absolutely my favorite. Fabulous menu, small but solid wine list and the staff could not be more friendly, attentive and fun.

It was our 55th wedding anniversary and The Black Trumpet seem to have an eclectic, interesting menu, The food was good. I had moroccan meatballs, my wife, a squid concoction. They were tasty although the squid were bit overdone. My principal complaint was very slow service from the kitchen and very pricey wine list. The servers were attentive and apologetic... More

very yummy. I am not a huge seafood person but I LOVED the crab cakes with Brandade. Quaint. Was a nice place for a romantic dinner.
