Very intimate

I've been here a few times and really enjoy the atmosphere. Choose to go upstairs where the feeling is more intimate. The food is not everyone's cup of tea but it's nice to try something new every now and again. It's also quite expensive so be forewarned.

We had an okay meal and this was our second time at this restaurant. The menu is always a challenge as you need to look up the descriptions of the food (we must not be 'trendy enough and up to date on all newer food descriptions'- My husband had one of the specials and he liked it a lot and... It was ok. That's it. Not great. Not terrible. Prices really high so I expect a lot more at these price levels. I'd also warn against getting any meat from whatever animal they are currently trying to use the whole thing. The 2 dishes that used that meat had very tough, overcooked meat.

I think I ate Miles Smith. The Black Trumpet supports local and sustainable agriculture, and the evening I dined at the bar, the steak I had was named Miles Smith, a delicious beef cow butchered by the kitchen staff themselves. They say 'know your food,' and I certainly enjoyed meeting Miles. We're so accustomed to factory-farmed meat, poultry, and even... More

We had dinner here. Reservations are highly recommended. Loved the choices on the menu from small dishes to medium dishes to entrees. Good service and friendly staff.

We've been going to Black Trumpet over the years and have had fairly good success with our meals. Not so on this last occasion. This was total disappointment. It was as if the chef was not even in the kitchen and some random person was selected off the street to prepare dinner. For the first time ever, in any restaurant,... More

Last Friday , May 1st 2015, My girlfriend and I had dinner at the Bistro. We have done so a few times now. It is one of our favorites in Portsmouth. The food is usually delicious :-) That evening we ordered the vegetarian paella and it was mediocre at best. We had to wait an exceptionally long time to receive... More

We ate in the upstairs wine bar. Cool atmosphere, great view. The food was interesting and tasty, and the service was good. I recommend!

In the past 25 years there have been 3 restaurants in this location and each has been exceptional. We no longer live in the area so this was our first visit to the Black Trumpet and had not just a wonderful meal but great entertainment in the way eating out is supposed to be. We could write volumes about the... More

We visited last night which was a very quiet night in Portsmouth. We ate upstairs and had the window table with a great view. Attentive service and very well paced. The food was excellent. Loved the carrot soup and the skate and scallops. Not too much choice on wines by the glass with no full bodied red offered. Only complaint... More
