The restaurant is very cosy, you feel right at home. Friendly staff. We took a medium meal for starters and wanted our son to have a medium meal for main- we (european) assumed that these would be big enough- given our experience of eating out in the US. But this time we were wrong. All dishes were tasteful and well... More

Black Trumpet Bistro lives in a 19th century house with a 21st century menu that chef Evan Mallet changes a lot. We're overlooking the Piscataqua River from upstairs. Jim's starter is sesame duck breast with mushroom, arugula and cherry salad. Have it. R picks foie gras stuffed summer squash with poached peach and micro greens. Have it. Today's fish: cod... More

Last night's dinner reminded us why Black Trumpet is the only place we ever dine in Portsmouth; the only Portsmouth dinner spot where we LOOK for an excuse to drive an hour from home (Boston) - to the pleasures that we know await us there ! Owner/chef Evan had a rare evening off, and his wife warmly greeted us on... More

Back Trumpet's menu struck me as the kind of place that has such unusual ingredients and unfamiliar combinations that I found it hard to anticipate what I was ordering. But in the end it didn't matter because everything was quite good. We came here on a recommendation from our niece and I'd definitely go back. Liked also that they took... More

Interesting mix in the menu. Great mix of flavors! Cheese board was great. Had our choice of 3 cheeses and a pâté. Yummy. Followed by light dinner. Didn't try the main dishes. We were unfortunately not very hungry. Would come back!

The food is outstanding with expert use of seasoning. I have never had a meal I didn't enjoy and always look forward to dining there. The atmosphere is charming with the tugboats as your view. The wait staff are friendly and very knowledgable regarding the menu. If you are in Portsmouth I would highly recommend you dine at the Black... More

An outstanding dinner. You will not be disappointed with any seafood selection. The waitstaff were knowledgeable and helpful so you can trust their suggestions.

Wonderful atmosphere, but food was just so-so...we had been told such fabulous things that maybe our expectations were too high. We loved the choices but when offered a ham steak were expecting just that. What we got was a porch chop and we all know how tough to get right those can be. I doubt for the money I would... More

Don't go here if you are not adventurous and willing to try new and different food options. This place is great for foodies willing to branch out for a culinary experience. I started with the seafood and corn chowder and it was fantastic. The corn made the texture creamy and it was filled with seafood. It would have been nice... More
