We'd eaten at the Trumpet several times and it's been good to great BUT it's now looking like a victim of its own success, too pricey for the quality. The wait service was just OK (why does one have to ask for an additional cup of coffee? We finally gave up on asking for two). Better training and slightly more... More

There are more restaurants in Portsmouth than meals to be consumed. Many are good. The Black Trumpet was great. We ate there twice in the nine nights we visited and were highly impressed each time. The meals were cooked to perfection, the wait staff highly professional and the restaurant ambiance serene. The first night I ordered a lamb shank that... More

First of all our server was great! He was very enthusiastic and our requests weren't a burden at all. My mom has a lot of food allergies and they were very good about accommodating. They made her a different version of a drink she wanted and made sure she would be able to eat her food. Overall great food, atmosphere... More

We loved this place.....great atmosphere, superior service, and food that was off-the-chain delicious. Imaginative presentation and super fresh ingredients. This was a really wonderful night out for us!

We loved this restaurant when it was the Blue Strawberry, but I think I like it even better now. The menu is limited, but what they do they do very well. The service is top notch. This place is always on our fine dining list when we visit Portsmouth.

We had a post-graduation dinner for my daughter's Pinning ceremony here. The food is very innovative, marrying flavors you wouldn't think of going together. The food is delicious, but expensive and in small portions ala fine cuisine. I had a Berber Burger which was angus beef with lamb. Very tasty, but at $19.00, I dunno. We had some goat cheese... More

In town from New York City and was highly impressed by the quality and price of this incredible dinner. We enjoyed all courses but by far the best was the house special Seafood Paella. Wow. Incredible, fresh farm to table ingredients, a lovely rustic, romantic atmosphere and our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive. In addition they made an excellent very... More

Go to the cozy wine bar upstairs an hour before your reservation. Exceptional service, romantic atmoshere in this 18th century mercantile building. Unique dishes with just the right portion. I really enjoyed the skirt steak--exceptional.

Three of us ate at Black Trumpet this evening for my wife's birthday, and we can see why Evan Mallett has such a strong reputation. All of the food was excellent: for appetizers, we tried the meze plate and the fried oysters; for main courses, we tried the chicken, the steak, and the lamb shortrib; and for dessert we tried... Burger served RAW. Bland food at ridiculous prices. Based on previous reviews something has gone terribly wrong here.
