Very Cool

We loved this place! The food was a little exotic but it sure was tasty! Our drinks ( you have to try the signature Black Trumpet cocktail) were custom made with bitters to enhance the taste. For dinner the monk fish was supper tasty, but my favorite was the local roasted vegetables! So fresh! The... read more

Purely by chance we fell upon this place for an evening meal. What a find and what a treat. Beautifully cooked food, with tastes that surprise and delight. Warm cozy atmosphere and a very helpful waiter. Good choice of wine too. We would thoroughly recommend this place. They had a big party in downstairs but coped well and service and... More

I'd heard so many wonderful things about this place and decided to finally visit after 7 years of living in Portsmouth. I went upstairs to the bar for a drink and a small meal. The atmosphere was warm and cozy and my glass of red wine was perfectly delightful. I order a "medium" plate of the delicata squash with some... More

Expectations were high for this Portsmouth eatery for our 31st anniversary, sadly it fell short. The charcuterie was good, but minuscule portions, and pricey. The Paella was dry and over cooked, the five tiny mussels were dried out (one was clearly rotten), the shrimp had been bleached and tasted horrible. After the meal we mentioned a few of the quality... More

I asked a perfect stranger where she would recommend we eat while in Portsmouth, she seemed to know her stuff, so we went here on her word. I wish I knew how to thank her, so I'll pass it along. We came here for dinner, and were fortunate to get a table on the second floor, which has great views... More

Wonderful. Intimate stone and brick walled bistro downstairs and a wine bar up. We ate on the bistro and had a great bottle of wine from upstairs. Excellent service, very informed server. Every dish was wonderful, save the desserts which we only good. Would go back in a heartbeat!

Had another last-minute-decision dinner here the other night.Evan continues to explore the world of unknown-but-delicious foods. Thursday our subsequent discoveries were a common weed that, when pureed, tastes like sunchoke, and a King Whiting fish- white, flavorful and with lovely soft flesh. We were happy to see a good number of tables filling up in the later hours, and overhearing... More

Our latest dinner at Black Trumpet was to celebrate our anniversary. We usually order seafood and vegetables rather than meat, and the menu heres offers many choices in both categories, with the emphasis on seasonal and local. I like to try several different flavors, and the three categories--small, medium, and main--make this possible. Sometimes there are so many tempting small... More

I had read somewhere recently that Portsmouth had a few great restaurants worth traveling for, and when given the opportunity to be in Portsmouth for an evening, I decided we'd try this top spot. The menu was difficult to narrow down because there were so many wonderful options. We decided to go with a small plate, two medium plates and... More

always a favorite of ours. the upstairs takes no reservations, but you sit in a cozy room in a building from the 18th century - you look out on the portsmouth harbor - and you think this is the best. then the food comes, and the creativity of the chef is amazing. great wine list with excellent affordable wines. You... More
