Elegant relaxed dining in old world style library.

The Library restaurant is a warm inviting place once you get inside. To be honest I've always been off put by the golden lions that flank the entrance. I enjoy a relaxed and elegant dining style. The interior gives a warm vibe of a regal old world style library. Upon being seated expeditiously... read more

We met a group of people at this fabulous old building completely outfitted as the library it used to be. Known as a steakhouse, those in our party who ordered steaks rated them as mediocre. They ran out of the scallop special by 6pm! My haddock was bland and rather dry (although the lobster and cracker crumb topping was yummy.)... More

This is the best steak house in the area. This joint rivals Capital or Abe & Louie's. Its located in the towns old library....unique. The steak sides and sauces are all top grade. Great is expensive. Small bar. Parking is painful.

Great setting, in a remodeled library... surrounded by shelves of books and other decorations. Very elegant setting, but not fussy about your clothes (no jacket required). The food was exceptional, and the service was great. Expect to pay a little more for this experience, but, as a treat, well worth it!!

We had dinner there over the weekend while staying in Portsmouth. We called earlier in the day to see if reservations were recommended. They were so we made them for 8 that night. Upon arrival we were promptly seated...at 8:25. The restaurant itself is beautiful and unique. We found service to be slow and the food a bit pricey for... More

Not much more to say than great food, great service and unique atmosphere. The beef we had was first rate and cooked perfectly. As good as any high end steak restaurant.

The Library Restaurant is one of the top fine dining restaurants in Portsmouth. On the ground floor of what was the Hotel Rockingham, its fine mahogany would work, tall ceilings and winows exude class in a quiet setting. Walls lined with book shelves full of the classics give The Library its namesake charm. The menu is varied and excellent with... More

The Library is so full of charm and good food that I really don't know where to start. The woodwork (done by the Pullman Company) is absolutely gorgeous. The furnishings and decor take you back to a long ago era where dining was an event and not just a necessity. The food is superb and the menu selections are from... More

My husband & I were out for a romantic dinner for 2. This place was perfect the decor was interesting and historic. The table placements made a busy dinning room cozy. The food was excellent. We each had a salad that was delicious and a nice size. We each had the 8oz filet mignon that melted in your mouth!! It... More
