My breakfast at the Friendly Toast (this morning) was great. Big texas toast, scrambled eggs with asparagus and goat cheese, awesome fried potatoes and pretty good coffe. The location is also nice (downtown Portsmouth) and the atmosphere is 'hip' if not 'trendy'. However, $14 (with tax) for one breakfast was a bit high (OK, I splurged and had coffee). My... more

Even it you get free breakfast in your hotel, don't miss Friendly Toast. It's menu seemed good top to bottom -- I liked the plate-sized pancakes, my wife loved the french toast with homemade cinnamonbread, and my brother swore by the omlets. So, that's a good range. Plus, the kids pancakes are cut into funny designs that were a big... more

I recently visited The Friendly Toast with my parents, my husband and our 1 year old daughter. We decided to go there on a recommendation from a doorman at the Sheraton. We should've just gone to The Works since it smelt so good when we walked by it, or to Breaking New Grounds where we have been before. (p.s. that... more

We were planning on going to a Greek restaurant: tasty, ordinary, and casual. But since we arrived in Portsmouth after nine o'clock, the Friendly Toast seemed to be our only trustworthy option that would still be open. The way it was described in the tour book made it sound like a Tex-Mex greasy spoon diner. We, The Fussy Four, soon... more

I was very disappointed after going here as a result of having read favorable reviews. The service was terrible, the food just OK, and the restaurant didn't appear clear. Sorry but I'm not returning there. more

I would have given a better rating but the coffee is a joke. How could you have such good food and have the coffee ithat s not drinkable!! We stopped for breakfast on a busy Saturday morning, the service was OK, considering the location I did not expect great service. The portions are huge and the quality is good. I... more

I've been dining at The Friendly Toast for over ten years now. I've brought others to this restaurant over the years too. It's fun. It's local. It's breakfast all day. It's great bread/ toast. It's HUGE portion sizes. It's great eggs and the best breakfast potatoes (get the Guy Scramble- scrambled eggs with cheddar cheese, black beans, avocado, and salsa... more

Went there after staying at Wentworth-by-the-Sea in Newcastle. The Friendly Toast is a great restaurant with good food and great service. And it's in a great location in Portsmouth. Highly recommend. more

Anyone who walks into the Friendly Toast expecting the ordinary or the tasteful had better turn around the moment they take a glance at the dozens of wonderful, kitschy artifacts--toys from yesteryear (love the Superman pogo stick!), old food industry advertising memorabelia, and tacky art. But don't confuse tasteless with tasty--while the menu reflects the decor, it's full of mouth-watering,... more
