Located just two blocks down from Market Square in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Jay's has become an overnight institution among locals who appreciate exceptional seafood. The quality of fare is unsurpassed, with fish arriving daily from local fisherman as well as some exotic catches from locations such as New Zealand and Ecuador. Four to six varieties appear on the ever-changing "Catch of the Day" menu, complimented by your choice of a gourmet sauce or marinade. The standard menu offers a more traditional flavor, including Maine Crab Cake, Haddock Piccata and the popular Linguine in White Clam Sauce. The atmosphere is casually hip, with no pretense. Reservations encouraged. Open Seven nights a week.

So it's a snowy winter night in lovely and unassuming downtown Portsmouth NH and you and your significant other wander into a cozy "soft on the eyes" dining experience on Congress Street that offers a steady stream of surprises as the minutes tick away . Fresh raw bar followed by camera snapping designed salads. A choice of at least 6-7... More

We made reservations for a Friday night at 6:30. We were seated immediately when we got there. Glad we made reservations, others had a 45 minute wait. We started off with the tuna tartare which was fresh and it was excellent quality. The sauces and avocado mousse went well and didn't overpower the tuna. I had a Caesar salad which... More

The staff was very friendly and attentive. We sat at the bar and the hostess asked if we would mind switching because she had a party of three; she payed for our first round of drinks because we moved. We didn't mind moving, but it was a nice gesture to receive a free drink. We had a dozen of the... More

As a local, I have come to know and love the bar at Jumpin Jays. The staff, even if you have not been a regular, are friendly and happy to see you. I love the mussels and and the beet salad. You can not go wrong with any of the fish and sauces offered. The bar offers all the top... More

We were skeptical about going to Jumpin' Jays on a Tuesday because they were having an oyster special and it would be crowded, but despite being crowded it was great. The food was outstanding and the prices were reasonable. Our waiter was helpful and adorable. Definitely would return if we make it back to Portsmouth!!!

We will be moving to Portsmouth in the near future and, as such, we have been attempting to try a wide variety of restaurants. We have been hampered by severe winter winds, snows and extremely cold temperatures and so we have frequented Jumpin' Jays three times in a few weeks because it is close to the Hotel we stay at.... Ate there last night. We all enjoyed our meals..great sauces that accompanied our fish. Nice wine selection by the glass. Our waiter also happened to be the bartender...took him about 10 minutes to greet us initially, and the place wasn't busy by the time we got there..Drinks were ridiculously slow to get...but he seemed to have no problem serving himself... Jumpin' Jay's is a swanky place with an upscale casual vibe. The first time I came here I got the Monkfish with the Mandarin Sesame Glaze With Wasabi Aioli and it was exceptional. Coming from the midwest I am still wowed by good seafood. The next time I came back I ordered the Coconut Red Curry with a Portsmouth Punch...and... More

Had a very good clam chowder; service was very good and so were the drinks. I also tried the crab cakes. We got there early and got a table with no reservation, but it got crowded by 6:30.
