Located just two blocks down from Market Square in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Jay's has become an overnight institution among locals who appreciate exceptional seafood. The quality of fare is unsurpassed, with fish arriving daily from local fisherman as well as some exotic catches from locations such as New Zealand and Ecuador. Four to six varieties appear on the ever-changing "Catch of the Day" menu, complimented by your choice of a gourmet sauce or marinade. The standard menu offers a more traditional flavor, including Maine Crab Cake, Haddock Piccata and the popular Linguine in White Clam Sauce. The atmosphere is casually hip, with no pretense. Reservations encouraged. Open Seven nights a week.

Good seafood!

The decor is a little bit tired, but the food is excellent! Our party of four had tried the pan seared scallops (top up with lobster), the monk fish with lobster sauce and the haddock piccata: they are all very good and the fish are fresh. First of all, after eating a plate composed entirely of snow crab claws, it would be hard for me not to give a 5 star review, but this place really earned it. The food was fresh and delicious and came out of the kitchen pretty quickly. Service was great and it was a nice casual place. I can't wait to... More

Jumpin' Jay's serves excellent fresh fish and interesting sides. My haddock piccata had just the right texture and flavor and my friends all enjoyed their choices. My only complaint is with the beer on tap which was very heavy on hoppy varieties. The excellent server said they do change their beers and I'd like to see other kinds offered.

Dined here on a Friday eve in July as a twosome. Ordered a little raw bar sampler (snow crab claws, marinated PEI mussels, clams, oysters, shrimp), and was THRILLED with everything on it. I seriously considered cancelling the rest of our order and just getting more of the raw bar! Our main dishes were also excellent--monkfish w/ a lobster veloute... More

J's is a local hotspot. great fresh seafood, locally sourced as often as possible. Place is pretty much always rockin', but the great reviews have somewhat gone to their collective heads. Don't get me wrong, well deserved, but, this is the kind of place that will make you wait outside 'till they open at EXACTLY 5:30 ( or w/e their... More

We visited jumpin J's restaurant in Portsmouth New Hampshire in July. We had a full day and stopped for an appetizer and a shared salad. The appetizer was fried calamari and it was very large. It had some spices in it that made it rather hot and a strange sauce for dipping. The Greek salad was average and the service... More

Fabulous halibut with lobster velouté, and grilled tuna with outstanding wasabi mayonnaise. Good sourdough bread, mashed red potatoes, and asparagus. Service slow at bar but pleasant, prompt, and helpful at the table.

My husband and I were very impressed with this restaurant. We both had the grilled swordfish topped with the black truffle butter sauce and it was outstanding. I chose the mashed potatoes, asparagus and corn, he selected the salad and we both loved our choices. Can't wait to return next year and we will definitely have dinner there twice that... More
