Opened in the Spring of 2010, Mombo’s dining experience is a short vacation from it all offering creative cuisine with international influences, warm hospitality and unparalleled service in a historic Portsmouth, NH landmark. Walk under the wood-beamed ceiling and wrought-iron chandeliers to feel the relaxed elegance of the space. Sit in the fireplace lounge, at the open kitchen bar, in one of the comfy banquettes or even next to the bubbling fountain in the rear courtyard to enjoy the delightful made-from-scratch dishes using fresh, local and honest ingredients. Whether it is the chef’s charcuterie platter, the seared fois gras or our signature lobster bisque that you start your meal with, we want to make you feel as if you have escaped from everyday stresses and leave wanting to come on vacation again at Mombo.

Epic failure

It's school vacation week and we were told upon entering that Mombo was missing a cook and two others. That should have been the first indication to leave. We arrived at 6:20pm and received our cold meals at 8:10pm. Server had too many tables. She never asked us if we wanted more bread, or try... read more

First, we were seated in the literal corner, to your right as you walk in the door. While somewhat close to the fireplace, cold radiated from the windows and walls surrounding us which made our corner perch feel like we were in a cold box. The service was friendly and either fast or very slow. My pork chop was overcooked... More

This is our second dinner at Mombo and my second 5 star rating. When I read though some of the other reviews I wonder. How could an experience so good for us twice be so different for others? Some of the complaints are interesting. No bread basket? - I'll take fresh baked mini-loaf and curry cornbread over a whole basket... More

We had dinner here for the first time this evening, for my husband's birthday. He wanted a cozy place with a fireplace and he loved the open ceiling with the dark beams and the Colonial feel. The service was fantastic right from the front door, the food was absolutely amazing, and we had a really memorable dinner. The only problem... More

My husband and I dined at Mombo for our anniversary and it was fantastic. Our meal - apps through dessert - was great. The food is worth the trek slightly outside of the main downtown area. The main floor dining area seemed a bit crowded, so we were pleased to sit in a cozy spot on the second floor. We... More

This was our first time at Mombo. Went with some friends who have been there before. The restaurant is located just outside Strawberry Banke in the old SB Museum shop. The décor is rustic and very nice. Nice bar and bartender very friendly. There were 4 of us. Had Beet Salads and Caesar salad all very good. Had Duck Breast-... More

This is a wonderfully cozy restaurant to visit on a cold winter night. My only complaint is that the menu is overly complicated to the point that one really can't understand what certain dishes are. Plus, the servings are huge. It would be nice to be able to have an appetizer and a main course and maybe a dessert. The... More

We first visited Mombo last year on a trip through Portsmouth. We visited again on during a two night stay and we were not disappointed this time either. Food was great and the service wonderful as well. If you are looking for a nice diner in Portsmouth you can't go wrong here.

We have been to Mombo several times over the years - admittedly the first time was not fabulous but when I voiced my disappointment to the manager he brought us back for a complimentary dinner and it was perfection. We had macaroni and cheese that was simply decadent, chicken in various ways (that is literally what the dish was), and... More

I had a wonderful pre-Christmas dinner last night with my boyfriend's family at Mombo. Tom and the whole staff was incredibly kinda and accommodating. Everything we had was wonderful but my favorites were an acorn squash soup with short rib which was spectacular and the duck entree that was cooked perfectly and served with an amazing squash sauce and dumplings....
