We were seated outside, upstairs. Great view over the river, and of the Moran tug-boats, right next door. Service was fast, accurate and friendly. Excellent chowder and Lobster rolls. Gluten free options available. There is a downstairs are where you can sit at river level, look out for it and ask to be seated there if you prefer.

We had a nice lunch at the River House. They had local beers on tap and a nice wine list. It was fun to sit outside and look out over the water. We had chicken salad and lobster rolls. Very good food and a decent price point. We enjoyed our lunch!

This outdoor seating at this restaurant provides for amazing views of the river. The chowder and lobster artichoke dip also made this a worthwhile venture. Unfortunately the service was a lot less then stellar. We waited an hour to be seated which was fine due to the fact that it was a Saturday night but once we were seated our... More

For some the seafood chowder might be a bit rich, but if you really love chowder, you will experience non finer that the RIver House seafood chowder. It is thick and full of wonderful pieces of seafood. The rest of the items on the menu are great as well, but man, that chowder is to die for. The outdoor seating... More

Fabulous views of harbor and tugboats from the outdoor deck, heated upper deck, AND interior window seats - great place to hang and watch the Blue Angels, etc when there is an air show. Generous drinks and LOVE their chicken tenders, veggie burger, and chicken/cranberry salad wrap! I've heard that both their chowders and fish dishes are exceptional. Staff is... More

PRO: Great burger, Great View, nice wait-staff CON: Chowder too sweet Our July 2014 visit to the downtown Portsmouth River House yielded an outstanding burger, too sweet chowder, and a good salad. The River House, which is a rustic-yet high-end seafood restaurant adjacent the bay has a great bay view. The young wait-staff work well together to treat customers well.... More

We were crashing in Portsmouth for the night and walking around to see the sites the next day. Wanted a place that was good for the kids and not your run of the mill restaurant. We sat out on the deck, got to see some tug boats. The place had tremendous gluten free options - the food was great, the... More

Beautiful atmosphere. 4 adults, 4 kids all had great meals. I had whole bellies and scallops. I was eating the ocean. Chowder was just as good. Eat here.

Highly recommended by our hotel staff person for a seafood lunch with a water view. We tried it...we liked it. The food was very good. My lunch companion ordered the River House Spinach Salad which consisted of Fresh American baby spinach topped with sliced button mushrooms, chopped bacon, tomatoes, red onions, carrots, croutons, and hard boiled egg. It was served... More

We spent the day with friends and lunch with a view is always nice. We waited maybe 5 minutes for a table for four. We all had some version of fish whether it was fried or broiled ... Shrimp, scallops and cod. The portions were good sized and the food not greasy. The service was very attentive. Nor did they... More
