Cava is located in the heart of historic downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Just a brief walk from the Portsmouth Parking Garage and the Ladd street access. We are located in the middle of quaint Commercial Alley. The walking alley way is home to several small businesses and Cava's Vertical Garden. Dine under the Northeasts only outdoor living wall. Cava is the dream of two long time friends John Akar and Gregg Sessler. Together they combined their years of experience in the restaurant business to build Cava. Featuring two wine bars, one on the street level, and one in our Wine Cave. John offers a diverse always changing selection of international wines to be paired with Chef Sessler's modern and classic Mediterranean cuisine. Chef Sessler uses only the freshest seasonal products available to create his innovative menus. Join Chef Sessler and his team at the Chef's Table for dinner and a show. *Cava accepts reservations for parties of 4 or more for our dining tables. *Cava accepts reservations for parties of 4 and under at our Chefs Table.*If you are a party under four people and are not interested in the Chef's Table, all seating is based on a first come first serve basis.*During Restaurant Week Cava will accept reservations for all seating, including our bar seating, for parties of two or more.*For Valentine's Day and New Years Eve, Cava will be accepting reservations for all seating, including our bar seating, for parties of two or more.*It is always a good idea if you are a party of four or more, or if you would like to sit at the Chef's Table to make a reservation in advance Cava.

Savory Tapas in a Sweet Setting

Found Cava on Trip Advisor and then found it on the alley and fell in love right away. Fortunately, the rains from early in the day had subsided in time for us to sit outside on their small patio area and it was just such an idyllic setting for my Father's Day dinner. All of the dishes we savory... read more

Four of us went to Cava to celebrate our Anniversary, and decided to order the Tasting Menu with wine pairings. I am not an adventurous diner, and was not allowed to view the menu until all the food had been served. Putting faith in my daughter and son-in-law, we polished off every item, plus dessert, and everything was absolutely delicious,... More

Lovely small outdoor setting on a sunny day! A real find as you explore Portsmouth :-) Service was terrific, interesting wine list & the best tapas offerings I've seen in a long time, recommend crushed tomato/ olive oil on sour dough bread, so good!

The food is good, but be careful of the wine. We went to Cava with a group of 13. Everyone ordered their own wine by just asking for an Albariño or a Tempranillo. When the bill arrived we discovered that some of wines were $40 a glass! So what should have been about a $650 bill was $920. It felt... More

First, understand that this is probably the most interesting dining experience north of Boston. And if you're the kind of person who eats a 12 oz steak and mountain of fries, you might not consider this restaurant. But you SHOULD ! In the words of the late Dr Konstantinos Frank, wine,Akers genius pioneer...."educate your tastebuds" ! Sure, there are a... More

We enjoyed Cava so much that we have been there twice in the last two weeks! First we went just the two of us (meaning my husband and myself) and then this past Sunday we took my parents. The first time we sat upstairs which I much prefer to downstairs. Both times we had the Spanish cheeses which are cheeses... More

Cava, which means wine cellar in Spanish is a tapas restaurant nestled in a charming alley in downtown historic Portsmouth, NH. The decor is contemporary and welcoming, at least on the first floor, the basement, where we were seated was dark, and not as welcoming. Now, there are 2 possible reasons why we could have been seated in the dungeons... More

Amazing, amazing food, and best service by a bar tender/waiter ever. Our waiter, Danny, was not only extremely knowledgeable about the tapas menu, but fun and attentive, too. We got one of their last reservations for a Saturday night; 5:15, and our party of four sat at a bar area. We were originally not sure if the bar reservation would... More

Cava has been on our list to visit for some time, and after a memorable chef's table experience it maintains a place in our top three. Every bite of our tasting menu meal was a delicious delight. Rarely can I say that a meal is perfect, but from beet salad to churros, I have nothing to criticize. We also elected... More
