If you want attitude and greasy, contrived food, this is the place to dine. The older gentleman and the staff have not yet learned to have southern charm, warmth and friendliness. Even the interior is not exceptional. The lunch menu seemed limited, with numerous items seeming contrived. Our ham and cheese sandwich was dripping with grease; the accompanying potato chips... If you are looking to have dinner and conversation this really is not the place for you. You literally can not hear each other speak. The food is pricey, $30 average a plate which does not include salad, or anything else, except some tiny corn bread muffins. Service was good. I wouldn't go back.

Nice to find a James Beard winner in Oxford, Mississippi. Really enjoyed the Fried Oysters and Grilled Romaine Salad. The Shrimp and Grits, the house specialty was rich, creamy, spicy and loaded with shrimp. Black drum with rice and crawfish was great too. Wine list was ok, cocktails were good. Dessert tasted like it was leftover from the day before.... More

I was in Oxford March 19, 2014 and decided to get an early dinner at City Grocery, so I could turn in early. I arrived about 5:30PM but dinner service doesn't start until 6:00PM, so I went upstairs to the lounge for a cocktail (which was well prepared and the bartender). I was dining alone, so at 6:00PM I was... More

Quirky, elegant food in warm, friendly surroundings. Can't say enough good things about staff - charming and knowledgeable about the food. don't miss it!

Yeah look it had a fair selection of beer, but it just seemed a bit... I don't know... meeeh? We sat outside on the patio watching the square, which was nice, but after a couple of beers we just didn't feel swanky enough to be there.

When I was last in Oxford there were only three restaurants--30 years ago. One is still open, one burned down and the last was torn down. Thankfully, City Grocery is there to pick up the slack. I had "Chicken Fried Oysters" and "Shrimp and Grits." The oysters were right up there with the top 10 appetizers I've ever been served.... More

Food and service were very good but it's still incredibly noisy and not for those who want a dining experience with enjoyable conversation. We had not been there in a couple of years and decided to try it again but we will probably put it off until we have out of town company who want to try it just because... More

Just had lunch and was very underwhelmed. I had the Winter Squash Salad and there was definitely a component missing I've eaten there twice now and will not go back

One of our regular dining spots on the square in Oxford! Eat here often and another great dinner this week. I had the City Salad which is always great and then enjoyed one of the entree specials of the night. The dish was pan fried flounder with sides of kale and small potatoes. EXCELLENT! The restaurant was busy but service... More
