We had such a wonderful time at Hal & Mal's restraurant. I had the red beans and rice which was delish.
Off the beaten track in the downtown area of Jackson, this venue offers much for a pleasant Saturday night. The dishes from gumbo to catfish were nicely prepared. The bluegrass music was entertaining--conversation was possible as well. And the waitress even left the dining room to secure a particular mixed drink next door.
I have been to Hal and Mal's many times for music. Always great. Good bar and not expensive. Hal and Mal White are community icons. But their restaurant has always been mediocre. I think it has slipped further. We came in about 8:45 before the music. There were few people in the restaurant, while other places in town were packed.... More
A Very eclectic and fun restaurant! Very Clean, Great Atmosphere for Lunch or a Night out! Menu has a wide variety to choose from so it's sure to please everyone! I've not gotten a menu item I didn't love!
More of a lunch place than a dinner destination, I think. Po' Boys, chili, gumbo, that sort of thing. My andouille sausage po' boy and my wife's shrimp po' boy were good. My Black Kat chili was kind of bland, which I didn't expect here. Don't go in with high expectations and you won't be disappointed.
The restaurant was very busy. We were doing a late business lunch. We both had red beans and rice. There was some confusion and the cheese and onions never arrived. Server was a pleasant young man. They have excellent tea in a large glass with a slice of lemon ... I didn't know you could slice a lemon so thin... More
One word can express my feelings about this restaurant---UNDERWHELMED!! Went with a group so that my be part of the bad experience but I've been to other restaurants with groups and not had this bad an experience. It first started when we sat down at the table. Some of our group had their backs to the windowed wall and said... More
Ate a late lunch here with my family on a road trip. Catfish po' boy and seafood bisque were really good. Service was fast and attentive. Lots of local color. Skip the chains and eat local/here! Right off Pearl Street, so it is easy to find.
My friend and I like to walk here from the Old Capitol Inn. It's an easy stroll in good weather. It's a comfortable environment with good food, large portions, and an easy and comfortable atmosphere. Service is excellent and you will leave satisfied!
This is one of those restaurants that is hard to rate. It is an institution in Jackson. Many of the locals love it. Yet it can't be a five star or else where would you rate a real five star? It just doesn't measure up to that. The food can be very good, as was the red beans and rice... More
