Much improved

The GEL's food offerings used to be kinda notorious amongst locals for being, er, variable. But I have been there four times this fall/winter, thrice for banquets, and have been very pleasantly surprised. Usually, large goups are impossible to feed well, but they did a very good job. Even the... read more

I visited Ely and was taken here by friends in early September. We started out in the bar and out on the back deck around sunset. We had a nice view and good beers with plenty of good popcorn to go with it. We moved inside to the restaurant for dinner. Service from both the bar and restaurant was quick... More

We love going to the GEL. It has the best bar in Ely staffed with the best bartenders. All the employees have worked here many years which helps make this place "feel like home." The atmosphere in the bar is a bit better than the adjoining restaurant, but both are fine. The food is fine...try the blackened walleye if you're... More

Ate in the lounge. Great service. Always efficient and friendly. Sadly thats where it ended for me. I ordered the"special".chicken cashew salad. Dry bits of chicken. Big, almost white, plain old iceberg lettuce, a few sticks of white celery and a few broken pieces of cashew. It did not come with a special dressing and had my choice of the... More

We ate on the restaurant side and the food was very good. But the decor needs some serious updating. We had dinner and it was dark so we couldn't see outside so no idea if they have a great view or now. The bar/lounge looked more north woodsy and updated wish we were seated there instead.

We recently enjoyed my birthday dinner at the Grand Ely Lodge. (They offer half price off the birthday dinner with a second full price order). I had the filet mignon and shrimp. The filet mignon was cooked perfectly - I ordered it Medium and it was very tasty!! I would have preferred broiled shrimp - but the only options were... More

This restaurant over looks Shagwa Lake in Ely. The fall colors around the lake provide a colorful canvas to the morning. Grand Ely Lodge sits high above the lake so the view is spectacular! They do offer outdoor seating as well. The food was very good our waitress was not very attentive or friendly. Tried to strike up a conversation... More

We were very pleased with our meal here - it was a Thursday night and we got right in without reservations. My husband was thrilled because they had prime rib (which is usually only available on Fridays and Saturdays at other places). We enjoyed nice warm bread, delicious chicken vegetable soup, fresh salad, and good meals. Particularly for the price,... More

When we got to Ely this was the first place we ate. I had the lake trout which was good, but had a few small bones in it. My boyfriend had the prime rib which was a bit over cooked. The service was good. It was very warm inside, they needed to turn up the air, as it was very... More

The Grand Ely is famous for it's food and hospitality. The walleye is always done well - the full dinner or the walleye sandwich. We love the linguine - and the serving is always enough for a take home box.
