Well, knock me over with a feather. This unassuming little restaurant, located inconspicuously next to Stefan's Bridge just east of Grayling, puts out some of the best food we had while vacationing in Michigan. Suggested by locals (how else would you find it?), the atmosphere was delightfully informal and woodsy and our dinners delicious. And we're not just talking burgers... More

Limited seating, and menu, but worth the visit for gourmet fish/food. Fly fishing lodging right on the AuSable with their own ORVIS SHOP!!!! Best trout dinner I have had anywhere.

My wife and I stayed at Gates' for our anniversary. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant and spent a night in the motel. The entire experience was memorable. Really enjoyed dining near the river. Being an avid fly-fisherman I enjoyed the the sounds and smells of the river from the opening window near our table. The names... More

My family and I walked in we were asked by the waitress if we had reservations- we did not. Apparently because of the small size they are required. She then began to chastise us in front of the (only) two tables eating. Stating that she would need to check if they could accommodate us, then came back and said we... More

This was our first time staying at Gates Lodge and eating at the attached restaurant. The dining room is small and quaint with fly fishing themed local art on the walls, But the best view is the huge windows overlooking the crystal clear waters of the Ausable River, one of the best trout streams in North America. As if the... More

This is a gem, hidden away in a very unlikely spot. We are locals, and we stumbled upon this restaurant when kayaking. In our area, a gourmet type offering in restaurants is extremely rare, so we were really happy to find a restaurant with the spectacular menu they offer, full of fresh ingredients. In northern Michigan, the Friday night fish... More

Most folks are out on the water for lunch and dinner but Gates has always been known for a great breakfast. It has gotten slightly worse each year. The old favorites everyone knew, like the Wader's Special and Guides Starter are gone. The pancakes are heavy and the hash browns, which should be an easy improvement are just awful. I... More

This place was a pleasant surprise. I haven't been impressed with Grayling fare for years, so I was very happy with the quality of the food here. The fish was great.

On the AuSable. Rooms for anglers right on the river. Fly shop is one of the best anywhere. The restaurant is a favorite located overlooking the river with great food. Peaceful. BYOB of wine.

Fishing the Ausable and hunting for ruffed grouse and woodcock. You would not expect to find an inovative restaurant in this area of Michigan, but the restaurant at Gates Au Sable Lodge is just that. Breakfasts are hearty (get the breakfast sausage, it's home made) and service is always with a smile. Dinners are great (as are lunches...menu is same).... More
