Best breakfast in town with some quirks

West Bay Diner has all the charm and quirks that you expect from a small-town locals joint. And towns don't get much smaller than Grand Marais! Went here on a Monday morning in late July after two of our party did a huge 45-mile ultra-marathon the day before. We were looking for hefty, hearty... read more

I found myself writing a lengthy review, when in fact, it was a rewrite of the same awful experiences many other diners had. So instead, I will note only a few major issues and end with an explanation of why the waitress asked us to leave. It was a surreal experience. Yes, she really asked us to leave! We were... More

The West Bay Diner is small and can't accommodate many guests, but the food is always worth the wait! The menu is somewhat limited, but we always find something delicious to enjoy. During our most resent visit to Grand Marais, we enjoyed a delicious vegetable quiche, egg sandwich, whitefish dinner and a marvelous meat pie. We also stopped in to... More

First of all, the food is very good. The service is strange. The waitress told us up front that the food preparation takes a while because the owner and cook prepares each meal individually. In fact, if there are more than 7 people in your group, you are only allowed to order pizza. We had a group of 6 and... More

I have never experienced such terrible customer service in my life. It seems like this place wants to open whenever. They are supposed to open at 7:30 but on tHis particular day they decided to open at 9, which is fine. What is not fine is opening at 9 but not starting service at 9:15. When we walked in we... Walked out, I did not get what I wanted, so we left, never to go back, they only serve what they want on the menu....

Stopped by on two different mornings and found the closed sign up and no signs of life. Called on Thursday evening to see if they would be open on Friday morning and the lady that answered the phone said we open at 0730. I explained I was aware of their supposed hours but found it closed on two previous mornings... More

While the restaurant appears to use quality ingredients, it's not worth eating here because of the poor service. Just because an item is on the menu doesn't mean you can order it. If the cook doesn't feel like making it, you won't get it.

The staff doesn't seem to be to concerned about serving the customers. There were only 4 choices on the menu. We all ordered the farmers omelet. It took almost an hour to get our food. One at a time with anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes between each person's order. I hope that they don't do this for a living.
