If you from Detroit or southeast Michigan you know the score, a Detroit style coney can't be beat. If you are visiting make you way into this legendary Coney Island and grab two with everything and order of fries and a pop. You will then understand.

I don't live in Detroit, but travel there frequently. Over many years (25) I've grown to love Detroit style coney islands. I'm not trying to malign Chicago or NY coney islands. BUT....Detroit coneys are the best. When it comes to evaluating Lafayette vs American vs National, you're splitting hairs. However, Lafayette is my favorite.

My younger son, visiting from Santa Monica, insisted on putting the famed Detroit Coney Island competition to rest. Two separate days, two baseball games and three visits later the winners were in: Lafayette reigns supreme, followed by Duly's Place (close second) and American, a distant third. Thanks to Anthony Bourdain, the competition expanded to include Duly's which is a distance... More

Detroit knows coney's and Lafayette is Detroit. They are classic coney dogs and fries and coney service where they act like they know your name

Almost everyone we talked to in Detroit said that we had to go to Coney Island to get a hot dog. The chilli on the dog and fries was great but in the end it was just a hot dog with onions and chilli. It was still a good dog, the service was fast and the staff was great but... More

Lafayette Coney Island is a true throwback located in downtown Detroit. I was pleasantly surprised when I bit into a REAL dog with a snap to it. The chile was savory and the bun fresh. I can't wait for another. The restaurant takes you back in time with tile floors and lots of memorabilia.

I saw on the Travel Channel the Detroit Coney Dog Challenge between American Coney Island and right next door Lafayette Coney Island. Though both were good, the American Coney Dog had a better snap and a little kick to it and definitely was my favorite. The service was friendly and funny. Try the chili cheese fries and all will be... More

For the best chili cheese fries come here. All of the other menu items seemed as worthy to other diners. That is all.

Be warned this is Very basic and unpretentious. Maybe not eat off the floor clean but clean enough. The best way to explain Lafayette is from the Saturday night live show skit with the Hamburger Hamburger Chip Chip except this is Hotdog Hotdog Fries Fries, Coke no Pepsi. Try the chilidog and fries, cheap and tasty. Lafayette Coney Island Vs... More
