A must see in Detroit

Lafayette coney island is a staple in Detroit. It has been around forever. The food is good, but remember it is hotdogs, chili, and fries. It is not gourmet. It is the atmosphere that you go there for. Your food comes out in 5 minutes. Very fun, usually crowded.

So in the battle of the two coney island dog places, this one gets the win for the better chili sauce, but frankly, it still is terrible compared to the chili sauce I am used to (Jimmy's in Hazleton PA). This is a dive, but has more personality and was more fun to sit in than at American. But yeah,... More

This is an iconic place to eat in Detroit. The coney dogs are good and the service is efficient. This is not high class dining by any means but for a quick lunch or a late night snack it fits the bill perfectly. The quantity of fries is quite large too.

After a Tigers game my wife insisted she get two things off her bucket list - The ultimate battle of the Coney Dogs...We tried American First then slid over to Lafayette - Honestly American was allot better. Lafayette was good too however the years have taken its toll on the restaurant and quite frankly it was not so very clean... More

Not from here but popped in while in Detroit. This place seemed like more of a dive than the one next store, so I HAD to go to this one. Got the chili cheese dog with onions and chili cheese fries. Harkens back to the good old days! Hot dogs were good and chili was a great topping for the... More

I know the comparison is hard, but I prefer this coney island to the American Coney Island. I don't know if the receipt is really different, but for sure the environment here is special.

The hot dogs are good, but they don't live up to the legendary status that surrounds them. Tried one from each shop and each was good in its own way.

Perfect stop at the end of a long day outside . . . we were cold and tired and found the ideal place before heading to the hotel. Nothing like a great Coney and bowl of chili!!

Not going to lie... It was my first coney dog. I never have wanted to try one but after a night of drinking we decided to stop in and I'm so happy we did. I will be back!

If you love dogs, you got to go. Had 2 up Tuesday night and they were as good as the first I had as a kid decades ago. Coneys have popped up all over town due to the product one can get at National but nothing beats "dining" in the original spot in the aged ambience.
