I am a Detroit native, and when I was in elementary school, my class visited this bakery to learn how they made bread. I've kept coming back over the years, and I've marveled at how they strive to keep up with the changes going on in Detroit and be environmentally sustainable. It is very close to Wayne State University.

I'm a big fan of Avalon. My mom actually introduced me to it. Whenever I'm home in the Detroit area, I frequently stop by Avalon to get some delicious bread and sometimes a cookie. It has a great vibe going on but the cashiers can sometimes not be the most efficient. But I do appreciate the time when someone tried... More

The Avalon is a really great bakery. It has a good variety of artisan baked goods and delicious coffee. I have been there several times and never got soup. The last time, I got a cup of their pea soup. It was incredible! You get your choice of roll to go with the soup. It was the perfect thing for... More

I recently had my first experience at Avalon! It was wonderful! As a chef who makes all of my own bread the old school way, I truly appreciate the beautiful crust they achieved on my polish rye. I brought that bread home, but I had an anise scone that was delicious. I think it could've had a bit more anise... More

Love going to Avalon. Great place to enjoy coffee (50 cents per refill) and a yummy baked good (or two!). I love the chocolate ganache brioche and blueberry buckle cake. Atmosphere is boho and artsy....very welcoming for readers and laptops. Outdoor seating in the warm months---nothing better.

Local bakery. Appeals to your every sense. Don't bother if you are on a diet or watching your carbs. Ha! And they take care of their employees and use local farmers! Keep it up!

Love their breads, friendly atmosphere, and proximity to other Midtown destinations. Fresh and delicious, frequented by the hip crowd.

I just became aware of Avalon by spotting their new location inside of Henry Ford Hospital. After one visit to this welcome beacon of nutritional hope for the hospital, I am HOOKED! Our sandwiches were so fresh and tasted astounding and I don't get to say that a lot since becoming vegan. The olive bread was out of this world... More

Simple things like the Farnsworth Family Farm bread (a sourdough with crunchy Parisian crust) are A+! There are exotic breads like the Hastings Street Challah (on Fridays, for Shabbat), but the standard stuff is impeccable. The flour is organic, the staff are treated like human beings not drudges, and the owners are eco-minded and peace-minded, like hippies with business flair!... More
