Best old school Italian. Not "chi-chi" or trendy, this was excellent!

I've been passing Detroit for years going up North. We finally decided to stop to see the Detroit Museum. Checked trip advisor for Italian and went to their recommendation of Giovanni's. It could not have been better. Started with exquisitely tender-fried Calamari (with tomatoes, capers and a... read more

I've been passing Detroit for years going up North. We finally decided to stop to see the Detroit Museum. Checked trip advisor for Italian and went to their recommendation of Giovanni's. It could not have been better. Started with exquisitely tender-fried Calamari (with tomatoes, capers and a light sauce), followed by a spring-greens house salad (which was included) and Lasagna... Good food, great service, fine wine. Our team had a great evening. Seated in a private room for a large party and we had a great time.

I would give it 5 of 5 except I miss the old ambiance. Some years back they had a fire and in the remodel they lost some of the character and charm. The food is still top notch I am just nostalgic. Still love the place!!

I alwsays find eating at Giovanni's is like eating in your Italian grandmother's house: everything is homemade and delicious. Whether you order one of their regular menu items for a daily special he will not be disappointed. Even the pasta is homemade and the recipes are handed down from one generation to the next When you approach Giovanni's on Oakwood... More

Made a special trip to an industrial area of town based on an online story. When I walked in, I had such high expectations. Atmosphere and decor were very nice. Restaurant was not crowded but our service was not up to par. Waited a long time for service and an extremely long time for our food. There seemed to be... More

If you have not visited Giovanni's before, it can be difficult to find, but find it. Tucked in behind the Marathon refinery at the southern end of the I-75 Rouge River Bridge, this is a classic restaurant in the best sense of the word. Giovanni's is long-established, having a comfortable and classy but not overdone decor. We tend to forget... More

Very nice restaurant, withe excellent service and food so close to the real Italian one. I choose "melanzane alla parmigiana", excellent. Long list of Italian wine, especially red one from Tuscany. Dessert were also good. And at the end a Limoncello, tipical south italian liqueur based on Lemon and Alcohol.

We almost didn't stop. After driving from Detroit and then past all the refineries, we could not imagine how a decent restaurant could be here. We stopped in the parking lot to double check the T.A. reviews, and thought, "Why not?" We are so glad we stayed!! The manicotti was superb, melt in your mouth. The eggplant parmigiana was perfectly... More
