Best Italian you will ever have in a Mexican neighborhood

The owner of El Barzon grew up in Mexico but is a classically trained Italian chef (meaning he literally trained in Italy). The menu features Mexican dishes on one side, Italian on the other. I prefer the Italian, but you must try the guacamole featuring a heavy mixture of cilantro... read more

If you really want to taste some great food you must try El Barzon. This place is a best kept secret that is starting to get leaked. A few too many suburbanites now frequent this fantastic eatery. Who can blame them for wanting the best of two worlds: here you can have either fantastic Italian dishes cooked to perfection or... More

First trip to El Barzon this weekend and would recommend to anyone who is looking for something new - such as having Mexican and Italian offered in the same menu. While seating is a little cramped and the noise level was a little high due to a large party seated near us, it's worth a trip to El Barzon to... More

If you are looking to celebrate a special event, look no further. El Barzon has some of the best Italian and Mexican dishes I have ever experienced. An appetizer is a must do. Our favorite is the Italian sausage and peppers. The fresh calamari lightly fried is outstanding as well. I tried the roasted poblano pepper soup which was very... More

Since my wife and I both avoid flour ingredients in our cooking, we thought we'd be safe at a restaurant that features both Italian and Mexican (provided we steer clear of flour tortillas and pasta). Boy were we wrong. The waiter was difficult to communicate with so he sent the manager to our table. The manager said (paraphrasing) "I feel... More

We went to El Barzon for a friend's birthday dinner. First - the neighborhood - you will not expect to find a fine restaurant around here. That being said - stay the course, it'll be worth it. You go through a run down neighborhood, turn down a seedy looking alley, and arrive at a fine dining destination... go figure. Valet... More

Love El Barzon's menu, Mexican and Italian!! They have tree to four specials and a daily soup that changes. Excellent service. A new outside dining area was added a year ago(my first time seeing it) and it was packed! Parking lot is now enclosed and secure since it is not in the best neighborhood. GREAT improvement. Overall excellent meal and... More

The homemade pasta was as good as we've had in Italy! Loved the gnocchi special and the aribiatta - so spicy, smooth and like nothing I've had before. We also enjoyed the mexican appetizers. The patio is absolutely lovely and Alex provided awesome service and made the best drinks - my mouth is still watering over the dessert cocktail!

Two of our party of 12 ordered the steak. It was overdone, and was the toughest, chewiest steak I have ever been served. When brought to the server's attention, he simply shrugged. This restaurant does not deserve the accolades.

First, about the setting. It is a rougher part of "Mexican town" in Southwest Detroit, but when you enter the place it is special. A pleasant, mostly covered patio dining area in addition to the restaurant. The staff is welcoming and helpful. The menu offers both Italian and Mexican. I was a little suspect since I am not a fan... More
