Nice, but very touristy

I've eaten at the Clam Box about a dozen times, having lived an hour away for the last 20 years. The fried food is fresh and excellent, with good portions. The fries could be better, though. I would only go during "off-hours". to avoid the lines. Very basic interior (picknick tables inside last time I went).

My mother in law and I visited there. We drove by before they opened and decided to ride around and come back. Half an hour later we came back and there was a line through the parking lot. We knew immediately we would have to stay and wait. It was WORTH EVERY MINUTE! Best clams I've ever eaten. At first... More

The food has been declining over the last few years. The dining room is always filthy and also needs a major remodeling so I wonder about the kitchen. The clams have been mediocre at best, partly due to the poor growing seasons but rather than charge more, they should offer smaller portions, even smaller than their mini-meals (which are basically... Recently my wife and I went on the "Great East Coast Seafood Tour" checking out the best seafood places from Baltimore to Maine. During this driving tour we made our way to Ipswich, noted pinnacle of all things clam. And in Ipswitch, the high oracle of clam eating is The Clam Box. The Clam Box is a small restaurant on... We had a great meal here and the staff were friendly and speedy. I suggest you go if in Ipswich. It will be closed around Thanksgiving so go soon or try next spring.

The Clam Box of Ipswich is one of several seafood stops in the area that boast traditionally prepared local seafood. The lobster roll deserves a 10 out of 10, the fried clams were good, as were the french fries, but the fried onion rings were terrible; skip them! In our opinion, it is a distant second to Woodman's in Essex... More

Clams were okay but nothing special. Paid over $25 for a small box. Clams at comparable place in Plymouth were less than 1/2 the price. We saw a PBS show that featured this place and decided we would try it on our New England road trip. Mentioned to the kid behind the counter that we came all the way from... More
