Locals know where to find this high quality seafood shack - especially the fried stuff

Good, fresh, local seafood well prepared is what you get at Essex Seafood. It is a bit off the tourist path so you may need to GPS it and you may still drive by it the first time. There is parking in the back - so pull in. Clams are the main event here and they are clean and well... read more

This had been recommended by friends so we tried it. I guess if you like fried food it's alright, but there was way too much batter on our fried clams & onion rings - french fries were fair. I probably would not go back.

I have been to Essex Seafood one million times in my life but this is only my second time this summer, through no fault of my own as I do not own a car. The food is delicious and the portions are plentiful. There are two meal options, boats and plates. Plates have French fries and onion rings, Boats just... More

I was in the area for business and asked locals for a non tourist focused seafood recommendation and was directed here. It was just what I wanted. If you are looking for fancy table cloths and formal atmosphere you will be disappointed as you will eat with plastic ware, plastic cups and paper plates. However, there is a cool car... More

I grew up in New England and my parents always went to woodmens. My husband and I came to visit for my dad's birthday and all he wanted was Essex clams from Essex seafood. The clams are wonderful, no sand , and fried perfectly. The onion rings are just delicious and again fried to perfection. The only thing negative was... More

After a few initial mishaps related to our not knowing the ropes, my mom and I ended up glad we struck out on our own and found this local haunt just 20 minutes from downtown Gloucester. I found us a table then went back up to the window to order a large side of crab cakes not realizing how huge... More

Just returned from Essex Seafood with a friend. He ordered a fried scallop and haddock plate with fries and onion rings. The plate was heaping, not greasy and quality was excellent. I ordered a lobster roll with onion rings in which I was extremely disappointed. The barely toasted hot dog roll had maybe 1/3 cup lobster in it. For $15.95... More

If you are from out of town or out of state and want to really enjoy the New England seafood experience, Essex Seafood is a good example of a New England Clam Shack. We were buying some fresh clams for steamers at their attached fish market and decided to go inside for a snack for the ride home. We ordered... More

Lunched with my husband & parents, we had the option of sitting outside, in the atrium, or inside. We ordered steamed clams, a fried clam plate & a fisherman platter. Everything was satisfying.
