Stale smell

We dined last Saturday night and were especially attracted because they have a nice sized gluten free menu. As soon as we entered the restaurant we noticed a very stale smell similar to a hospital or an elderly person's home. Not urine or anything like that but just stuffy, stale, and unpleasant... read more

We were at the Topsfield Fair and cruised over to Essex to use a soon to expire Groupon. My expectations were modest, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Both of our meals were excellent plus generous portions. My husband had the baked haddock which came with plentiful veggies including broccoli, green beans and carrots. I had the Mediterenean scallops which... More

The location right on the river overlooking the marsh and flowing water is lovely. The restaurant was not very busy on Thursday night so we could eat in peace and enjoy our conversation. Food is rather lackluster, on the soggy side, though presentation is good. We would go back perhaps for lunch on the deck to enjoy that view.

We had wonderful meals at Periwinkles in Essex. The Mediterranean Scallops were out of this world. The scampi sauce was delicious and the tomato ravioli was a very pleasant surprise. My dining companion has coconut crusted haddock and was equally pleased. The view of Essex harbor was enjoyable, as we sat by the window watching loads of boaters haul out... More

Stopped at Periwinkles for a quick drink on their deck at 2:30 PM this beautiful sunny afternoon. Place was busy and waited about 5 minutes for a table river side on their deck. The hostess sat us with menus and our waitress was there for our drink order but we had not had time to look at their offerings so... More

This is located on the Essex strip, certainly is upscale from Woodman's. We took my 88 year old mother for lunch and it pleased her very much. Wait staff was very attentive, but the wait for our lunch was a bit long. In fairness they were very crowded. All the meals were fine with the exception of the pasta dish... More

We have been going to Perriwinkles for years and after visiting twice this summer have crossed it off the list. Seafood platter was just ok, clams were soggy and scallops were cut into small pieces before frying. Visited this past Saturday night with another couple from out of state and was very disappointed . I know you don't go to... More

It was one of those perfect New England days. Pan Seared Halibut prepared to perfection. Excellent value and service.

Periwinkles is the perfect New England coastal eatery. Housed in an old wooden building on the edge of a small working marina, it's a great place to dine after a visit to nearby Crane's Beach. The baked haddock was just right - not overcooked - and the ambience was mellow as we watched ducks swim along the creek below us.... More

I try to eat at Periwinkle's once each summer because I love sitting on their deck on a beautiful summer day watching the boats go in and out of the Essex River. This year I treated myself to a lobster meal and I wasn't disappointed in any way. The lobster was perfectly cooked, tender and delicious. I wanted something besides... More
