Deserted at lunch time

This is an old mainstay in the Harper's Choice village center. It's feeling like it needs a refresh and a little update on the menu. Zapata's is a hidden treasure. Unpretentious place with consistently good traditional Mexican dishes like chile rellenos, chicken mole and shrimp with chipotle sauce, as well as standbys like quesadillas, fajitas and burritos. Excellent margaritas and 25 different tequilas. Our group of artists lunches there regularly; Zapata's will do separate checks even for 8 people. Rarely crowded which is a shame... More

Good food , good prices, try the sopa de marisco . Really the best in town. South of the border atmosphere, nice bar also.

Of course, Mexican is always tricky in Maryland, since so many of the places claiming to serve authentic Mexican food, are really Dominican or Salvadoran in disguise. Our group of 7 went for lunch and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Even so, we rarely saw our waitress. She came out to take our order, put it on the table after a while, and then disappeared completely. After waiting 45 minutes for our check, one of us had to go in the back and find... More

...moreover, they slapped an automatic 18% gratuity on a TAKE OUT order, without disclosing that policy beforehand (the order was for three entrees). Avoid.

I usually come here on Wednesday evenings for happy hour. The happy hour specials are pretty decent, DJ Tre Styles is playing AWESOME throwbacks that'll definitely have you SOL (singing out loud). You can get a 4 bottle beer bucket for $10 and a variety of liquors for $4 during happy hour. I've had a few of the dishes like... More

Being empty at 12:15 on Sunday should have told us enough to leave.Took over a minute for someone to come out of a back room & tell us to sit anywhere. Starting with the complimentary chips, not a pleasant dining experience. Chips were greasy and bitter. In fact, everything we ate had a somewhat bitter taste. Strange for Mexican food.... More

I was almost turned away by the low ratings, but it was close & on a Friday evening in Columbia, MD, that's important. It turned out to be a great dining experience. Yes, you do have to walk theprough the bar to get to the restaurant & it's not the easiest to find in the centre, but it's worth all... More

This place is a little harder to find, but I think it is the best Mexican Place in Columbia, and I have lived here 30 years.

Typically I only review restaurants when the experience is outstanding. My experience at this Mexican restaurant was outstandingly bad. I do not live in the area, so I was looking for a decent Mexican place, and found Zapata's on both Open Table and restaurant.com. I ordered a stacked enchilada plate, which was large, but contained broccoli, squash, zucchini, carrots, etc.... More
