Consistently Good Afghan Food

This Afghan oasis is a reliable outpost for quick, flavorful food: loved the Kaddo (baby pumpkin with sugar and seasoned with garlic yogurt and ground beef sauce ($4.49) and the rice pudding. Pleasant counter service. Only a few tables, though.

The vegan platter includes pumpkin, potatoes, spinach, peppers, eggplant, chickpeas, and rice. Ask for no yogurt sauce to make it vegan. Comes with that delicious hot oven bread. Kind of store front dining area or call ahead about 20 minutes for pickup and carry out.

Terrible Americanized Afghan food. Tasteless and bland. You also don't get what you order. Green peas instead of chick peas. Chicken curry was very dry. No green peppers in chicken dinner. Fried rice instead of white rice. Out of okra and babaganouch appetizers. Naan bread was terrible. Try Royal Kabob on Route 3 in Odenton or the Awe Shack in... More

The chicken kabob was a bit dry and tough but had good spices. The side dishes (like most Afghan restaurants) are the highlight and they offer all the usual choices.

What an upgrade in decor from the original Maiwand on Harpers Farm road! It looks fancy but I believe the price is the same. I went there twice. Once I had the ground beef kabob, eggplant dip. It was very good. I tried the lunch lamb curry special. It came with salad and bread. The lamb was tender. I enjoyed... More

Two choices for meat - Do Piaza was not very well flavored (lamb stew) with more onions and less meat and the chicken tikka - well there was none! Had to ask the staff to bring out more for the buffet (still 1.5 hours left for the buffet). Lots of starch readily available (rice, bread, potato) - dessert only had... More

We stumbled upon this restaurant in the middle of a shopping center. A little hard to find but worth the search. For starters we ordered the hummus appetizer and knew that we were in for a great meal. My wife ordered the steak kabob and I had the lamb kabob platter. Both came with a basket of pitas, rice and... We eat often at an Afghan restaurant in our hometown, so we were interested in trying Maiwand Kabob when we visited our daughter in Columbia. Maiwand has a slightly different spice profile from our Helmand province restaurat which we especially noticed in the sabzi (spinach ). Some dishes such as the very tasty baba ghanoush are more Mediterranean than Afghan.... More

We went to the Maiwand Kabob in Columbia for lunch and made the mistake of ordering the Gyro instead of kabobs. We didn't care for it. Meat was overdone and the sauce was lacking. The pumpkin appetizer was recommended by a friend and was quite good though. We may return and try the kabobs perhaps we chose the wrong dish.
