Description: Duarte Rebolo was born in Madeira Island, Portugal, a popular European tourist spot. His career in restaurant service began there and so far has spanned about 25 years. He left Madeira to work for Celebrity Cruise Lines. It was here that he worked with world renowned Grand Chef Michel Roux. It was here that he met his wife Linda, and decided to move to the Washington area. While here in Washington, he worked at The Water Gate Hotel with Jean Louis Pallidin until Jean Louis Left. At this point the Pallidin became Aquarelle and the Chef was Robert Weidemaier. Duarte continued to work at The Watergate until his dream of opening his own restaurant came true. Tavira opened in November of 1999. The cuisine is primarily traditional Portuguese, as well as Mediterranean dishes. It has been given favorable reviews from the Washington Post, Washington Diplomat, The Gazette, Bethesda Magazine and Washingtonian Magazine 100 Very Best Restaurants. Duarte's professionalism, attention to detail and hard work will make you Dining experience a deligtful virtual escape to Portugal

I've driven right by Tavira for years and never went in. We had dinner there and the food was good. So was the atmosphere. It lost points on the service. We asked to have the whole fish filleted in the kitchen so the squeamish diner did not have to see it. They said it had to be table side! We... More

It takes a little magic to turn the basement of an office building into a comfortable European restaurant, and Tavira has it. Service is solicitous without being intrusive. Bartender makes the best sangria in town--order a pitcher for the table. Food is delicious. And it's not too loud--a lovely place to go if you want to be able to actually... More

I love this restaurant! When I go in alone, I sit at the bar and the owner always stops and talks with me, the food is ALWAYS great, and the service is always as good as the food! I always get one of the daily specials of which there are normally at least 4 choices...in addition to the great menu!... More

Tavira is the fourth restaurant to occupy this space, and clearly the best. The first tenancy was called Mrs. Carmack’s and was quite successful, though not nearly as elegant. It closed only upon the dear lady’s death. The next two were quite short-lived, and now we have Tavira, which Mrs Too and Ben consider top shelf by any measure. It... More

We rang in the new year w our first visit to Tavira. What a great experience! Very pleasant setting - we were in one of several side rooms off the main dining room - great for a romantic evening. Wait staff was very attentive and knowledgeable. Menu was fixed b/c of the holiday w 4-5 choices for each course. We... More

Spent an excellent night at Tavira recently for a birthday dinner. Our group was a full-spirited 12 and the staff at Tavira didn't miss a beat with a group that size. We had to change our reservation more than once with additional people joining us and each time was handled with ease. We had a wide range of experience with... More

I really enjoyed this restaurant. It reminded me of an old Italian restaurant that is hard to find but worth the effort. The decor is charming and warn. The tables are sufficiently spaced yet its cozy. The entrance from the underground parking lot elevator helped make it feel very secret. We were a party of 5 and had a nice... More

Went there recently for diner with my wife and a couple of friends visiting from out of town. I had one of the fish "specials of the day," the other 3 guests in my party had codfish, the traditional fare of Portugal. We all greatly enjoyed our food. The service was great as well, and the prices were very much... More
