Outstanding sushi at a reasonable price in a modest atmosphere

Matuba Sushi has been a fixture in Bethesda for quite some time. The sushi has always been excellent and the prices extremely reasonable (not just relative to Bethesda which is an expensive area but regionally). They have a traditional sushi bar, a western seating style restaurant area with 7 or... read more

Although the regular menu is typical Japanese (and the prices reflect this), the true excellence of Matuba lies in the back... The rotary buffet during lunch and dinner provides excellent value for sushi-devourers like myself. The fish is high quality and the experience as a whole is tremendous!

We visited Matuba for their sushi lunch buffet today and were delighted! Our daughter is a sushi fiend and loved the idea of a conveyor belt buffet that is less commercial than the few others we've found in our area. My husband is allergic to fish, so we were quite happy that there are non-sushi options on the buffet as... More

The Sushi tasted great, there was quite a bit of variety available on the conveyer belt (called Buffet in the restaurant). For freshly made Sushi, I thought the price was more than reasonable. The conveyer belt part of the restaurant is quite small, so be prepared to wait or sit in the main part of the restaurant. The staff was... More

Their portions are not necessarily related to price. The lunch box plate for $9.50 was huge - miso soup, 4 types of sushi, rice, and fried vegetables. The Spider plate with crab and avocado for $14.50 was much smaller, but very filling. Everything tasted good and was well prepared.

I've only been to Matuba for lunch to get the California lunch box. It's a good deal for miso soup, chicken teriyaki, white rice, a california roll, veggie and shrimp tempura and pickled vegetables. The service is good and the food is fresh. I'll be back!

how can you go wrong for a 12.95 sushi lunch buffet? Of course, bad food wouldn't work...but Matuba is very good. Freshly made sushi and an extremely attractive price. They will have you seated and out before you remember what you ate. Fantastic lunch spot.

I go there for lunch often. Inlike their salad bar because it has steamed broccoli, mushrooms, tofu, etc. Excellent foods that keep you healthy. They always have a special for less then $10. I do not always get it but that is a bargain. The service is excellent and if you like sushi they have a variety of dishes on... More

I love Matuba. I have been going there for 5 years now. Lunch Sushi at the rotary buffet is definitely where it's at, I always feel like I get my money's worth. They have fried rice and chicken, dumplings and shrimp as well, so it isn't just sushi if you're looking for something for the kids or a break from... More

Matuba has been in Bethesda for over 25 years, and it pioneered the rotary sushi bar in the DC area. There is better sushi to be had within a few blocks, but Matuba is Bethesda's neighborhood sushi restaurant. Like Cheers, everyone knows your name (or at least recognizes you).
