An island mainstay

I've been eating at the Gawker since I was child and no visit to the island is complete without a stop here. The menu is plentiful as are the portions and it's BYOB so you really can't go wrong. Unpretentious folksy place overlooking Carver's Pond and the spillway. We ate lunch in late May when it was very quiet and enjoyable. It seemed unchanged in fifty years with very informal atmosphere consistent with out island lifestyle. The lobster was probably living free yesterday and tasted fresh. Tank stored lobster deteriorates taste.

Our 40th wedding anniversary dinner! Spouse did not want to make reservations for other good restaurant choice in town with opening of adjacent art gallery and accompanying full house.Wife ordered haddock sandwich-very good.I ordered fried seafood platter- very good fish, oysters, shrimp, scallops, clam strips. Ordered bowl of clam chowder -top notch. Order/pay at counter. No fountain soda or tea option.Served in plastic... More

We ate lunch here during a day trip from Rockport. I had the seafood chowder, which was excellent, and the lobster roll. I will tell you that I have never understood why people swoon over lobster. To me, it's just OK (I can take seafood or leave it.) The lobster roll was good, but could have used a touch more... More

Gawker is the opposite of fancy. There is no table service and food comes in a plastic basket. Had a cup of clam chowder which was great. Wished I had just had the bowl for lunch. Then the fried shrimp roll which was ok. My dining companions had the lobster rolls and were really enthusiastic although they are a bit... More

These are real New England Fried clams. Well cooked, generous portions and really tasty. Just great!

I returned to the counter to see if they could to do anything with the very slimy and greasy portion of scallops I had just ordered. Within thirty seconds, I had four staff members on the other side of the counter- not trying to help, but yelling at me, telling me that they have never had a complaint (ever!) and... More

In response to this review the above came and said that e bought seafood chowder two days earlier and there was no seafood in it s with no questions asked we credited the 6.99 he paid toward his order. He then proceeded to our icecream window where he purchased a rootbeer float saying his daughter had bought earlier in the... More

The fisherman's platter is huge and not greasy at all. Too few scallops, but every other kind of fish you can want. It is more than enough for a family. Pay the extra 75c and get the onion rings instead of fry's, we did and it was worth.it. The lobster stew is not a stew at all, good amount of... More

Lunch for our group of 4 on the 19th was just right. The crabmeat rolls were excellent and I really enjoyed my seafood chowder. The onion rings and fries were really good too. A thumbs up on the coffee and the whoopie pie we took home was very good. Excellent friendly counter service and you cannot beat the view of... More

When I was a kid the Harbor Gawker (pronounced 'habba gah-cka') was just a hole in the wall, serving mostly ice cream. Everyone knew everyone. It has obviously expanded into a full sized restaurant - with a VERY casual touch. There are no wait staff. You help yourself at the counter and return your empties to the designated bins. But...
