The food can be very good to excellent. Sometimes something stays on the menu and shouldn't--the octopus was excellent in July and tough and stringy in August. The soups and salads are well-priced and very good. Mains are large and very good to excellent.

I had been ready to really enjoy dinner at The Claremont. Sadly, it was not to be. The setting is wonderful and the grounds meticulously maintained. But the public spaces in the hotel (we were not staying there; just there for dinner) were surprisingly shabby and drab. After being seated in the half-full dining room, it took a surprisingly long... More

We had originally planned to eat elsewhere but had not made reservation and were turned away (did not expect this on an Wed evening after Labor day. We used TripAdvisor to locate another place in Southwest Harbor and decided on this one. We were glad we did as the original place was crowed and loud. The view was outstanding and... More

The Claremont is a step back in time..I cannot help but think of "The Great Gatsby". The wood paneled foyer with the small reception desk has an air of history seeping from the walls, furniture, photos of a previous age & books. I can highly recommend the elegant brunch (not exclusive to hotel guests) and the casual brunch & afternoon... More

Friendly people and good service. Great place to pull into on a boat for drinks or dinner/lunch. A great old hotel with a lot of history.

Recently renovated bar at the dock is great. Do get the onion dip with some chips. Our children liked the croquet while had our drinks. The dining room is blend of old world and contemporary. Very quite and a little formal. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the prices on the menu. Good value when compared to other offerings... More

We came by just to see this historic building, wandered down to the pier and had the most wonderful cheese and fruit plate - really!!! Service was exquisite. The croquet lawn was being manicured; so we asked about it. We were encouraged to play - they spend about 2 hours/day maintaining the three courses. From the sides of the courts... More

Absolutely amazing food at the Xanthus - we had the swordfish, the lamb, an appetizer, and a dessert, along with a lovely bottle of wine and the tab was around $150. Aside from the food, it is also worth a stop for the view and to see the old hotel. It is a bit like stepping back in time to... More

Xanthus is the name of the restaurant - it is located in the Claremont hotel. Watch for the sign as neither are visible from the road. When we go, we make sure to allow time to walk down to the boathouse bar and have a drink prior to dinner. They were just finishing up the remodel the night we ate... More

We had a great dinner and a nice lunch here and were delighted. The combination of foods were unexpected but fit together perfectly and my swordfish was the best I have ever tasted. Service was attentive and helpful and we had a great experience.
