Stopped here for buffet on labor day on the way back from Acadia around 1:30 PM.....buffet time posted was until 2:30 PM....even one hour before, half the items were over and had to wait for several minutes before those were replenished.....by the time we finished around 2:15 PM, desserts were over and we were told that it was our fault... We are new to Indian Cuisine, and we were craving some. We found this place through a quick search of "Indian Food in Maine". We were impressed by the delicious food and service. At the very end, they gave us a dessert in which my boyfriend absolutely loved. This will be our go-to Indian place.

I visited Taj Indian place during a weekend stay in Portland, Maine. The owner of the restaurant welcomed us and told us the buffet would be ready in 10 mins. The food was delicious and there was a variety of dishes available. The Nan was good! This is an authentic Indian restaurant and i would like to recommend it!

Finally, a great Indian place in Greater Portland. Not fancy, but that's fine. The food is terrific and the servers are very, very friendly. A very inexpensive meal out, and we are ordering take out three days later!

Service was ok and food was average, I have had much better Indian food. Appetizers were not good, had ordered the Samosas and pakoras. The dinner was average. Will try a different restaurant next time. At least they were open late.

We had lunch here one day. I wanted the Tandoori Chicken but was talked into the buffet because it also featured Tandoori Chicken. However, the Tandoori chicken on the buffet was dry and lukewarm and I am not a fan of most of the other buffet items... when they brought more out, it was much better. The tandoori roti was... More

For years after moving to Maine I despaired of finding an Indian restaurant that matched my very high standards after going to school with Indian friends who cooked for me. I'm not going to debate the merits of how "authentic" this restaurant is, but I will say that when two of my friends from India came with me there, they... More

We found this newer restaurant on Tripadvisor while staying in South Portland. The food was authentically prepared and the spices blended very well with the sauces and chicken. This is a welcome addition to the sameness of so many eateries around the Maine Mall area.

Thank goodness for reviewing sources like TripAdvisor because we probably never would have tried Taj if not for reading positive reviews. The place is in something that looks like an office building... on the outside it did not look very promising. But oh my - what a wonderful restaurant. The wait staff is super (brothers, I think)-- so nice, so... More

Had an appetizer (fried spinach) and a lamb/rice dish, neither was terrible although the lamb was overcooked, just an average meal in an average restaurant sans any atmosphere.
