Great food and atmosphere

My husband and I dined here with another couple and enjoyed the inventive cuisine. Asian inspired restaurants are not one of my go to choices but a friend and I decided to give lunch a try at the Green Elephant and we thought the food was excellent. We tried the dumplings and the edamame for appetizers and greatly enjoyed both. The stir fry with vegetables and tofu was delicious. Perhaps what I haven't enjoyed... More

This lovely little restaurant in the Arts District had an advantage with my gluten-free wife and me. We had eaten at a sub-par Thai restaurant in Maryland the week before. So when we tasted this wonderfully fresh, creatively-prepared vegetarian food, we felt like we had found a home. The Fragrant Coconut Soup was excellent. My wife had an excellent peanut... More

My friend and I are not vegetarians, but we decided to try the Green Elephant based on excellent reviews. The food, atmosphere and service were wonderful and I just wish we could have spent more time in Portland to visit the restaurant again. We plan to look for similar restaurants in NYC where we live.

Not the place to go when you want a slab of steak or fish, but for something different yet tasty, this fits the bill. I am amazed at how inexpensively one can dine here, yet still fill like its a special dinner out! The menu includes a variety of noodle, rice or other vegetable based dishes that then incorporate particular... More

My husband and I are not vegetarians but it was late, we were starving and this place was close and had seating so we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed! We started with some appetizer specials- a spring roll, scallion pancake and the edamame-all delicious. I had pad thai which was so flavorful and a generous... More

Congress Street is in the heart of Portland, lots of hustle and bustle and positive energy! In the middle of all that is an amazing little oasis called "The Green Elephant". If you're a "meat and potatoes" sort, don't even look into the windows. This restaurant is strictly vegetarian with a strong Thai influence. The appetizers (we favor the brussel... More

Reviewing once again as I find my self in Portland this very snowy 2015! Happy to find the Green Elephant open on a Monday evening this trip to Maine. Mo-sat now it seems. I visit the city about 5-6 times a year and one meal will be eaten here always. Took my daughter and her beau and we braved frigid... More

We had other restaurants in mind for dinners on Valentine's weekend - especially because Green Elephant doesn't take reservations - but we were delighted to stop in for lunch and find a window table immediately. My wife and I split an order eggrolls and pad thai and both were delicious. I wouldn't hesitate to visit again to try some other... More

From the local loose teas to the curry dishes, incredibly fresh and tasty. I met a group for lunch, and they were very accommodating while I waited for my party to arrive. The green elephant tea was amazing, but the Panang Curry Vegetable and Tempeh had great flavors. I brought the remaining sauce home with me (I rarely do doggy... More
