This is an Eritrean restaurant, our first. Meals are eaten with fingers and using what is effectively a thick crepe made using an African grain meal flour. The food was quite spicy and we did end up with turmeric stained fingertips but we did enjoy the food and it was a very friendly and reasonably priced meal. Better than greasy... More

My wife and I were taking my 22 year old vegan daughter out for here last restaurant meal before she started hiking the AT up in Maine. My wife and daughter ordered something called sponge bread onto which they put all sorts of cooked vegies and i think a little lamb. They really liked it. It had two very small... More

Came in on a Sunday night when passing through Portland, no one else around, but greeted with very friendly service and enthusiasm by the owner. Ordered red lentils and collard greens, service was relatively quick and dishes were flavorful. It would have been great to have a vegetarian sampler plate with more dishes for 1-2 people, but no big deal.... More

the injerra (pancake "plates") were delicious. Both of our selections were excellent, and they had some Kenyan beer that we liked. (Tusker).

On a little side street tucked away in the center of downtown Portland you will find a gem! It is a very very casual environment reminiscent of a really old burger king or cafeteria. Don't be deterred! This is some of the best Ethiopian/Eritrean food I have had in this country. Vegetarian options galore. Unique and delicious flavors. Be brave.... More

Only having eaten Ethiopian food once (in Washington, DC) and enjoyed it very much, I wanted to give this place a try and am happy about the experience. The place is tiny, unpretentious, and the food is super tasty. Even something as simple as red lentils, my favorite side dish, carried remarkable flavor. The real surprise (as in odd) was... More

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, then the Asmara Restaurant in Portland is it. The food is delicious, spicy or not, to your taste. Eritrean food is similar to Ethiopian, but the difference is worth sampling. Try their sweet tea with plenty of sugar along with your meal for a nice complement. My favorite is the... More

This was a new culinary experience for both of us. The service was friendly and they seemed to genuinely enjoy helping us to learn the cuisine. The aromas make your mouth water immediately and the food does not disappoint. A great place to visit and an excellent starting point for us!

Friendly smiley server and cook - simple decor - very authentic food perfectly spiced. The sweet african tea is lovely. Couple of tips - no cutlery you eat with your hands - but remember just your right hand never the left! All in all great place - but you need to be adventurous.

I am from Maine but lived near Little Ethiopia in Los Angeles for fifteen years. When I decided to move back, one of the first things I did was to search for an Ethiopian restaurant in Portland. I was so pleased to find this one and very excited about trying it as soon as I got back to town. I... More
