This was a new culinary experience for both of us. The service was friendly and they seemed to genuinely enjoy helping us to learn the cuisine. The aromas make your mouth water immediately and the food does not disappoint. A great place to visit and an excellent starting point for us!

Friendly smiley server and cook - simple decor - very authentic food perfectly spiced. The sweet african tea is lovely. Couple of tips - no cutlery you eat with your hands - but remember just your right hand never the left! All in all great place - but you need to be adventurous.

I am from Maine but lived near Little Ethiopia in Los Angeles for fifteen years. When I decided to move back, one of the first things I did was to search for an Ethiopian restaurant in Portland. I was so pleased to find this one and very excited about trying it as soon as I got back to town. I... More

I would have never eaten here if it were not for a friend I was shopping with that day. She was looking for ethnic food specifically, Ethiopian. We did a web search and found Asmara. One word would would be WOW! The food was great! We walked into the small cozy restaurant and it was like I was walking into... More

When wanting a savory, satisfying, relaxed meal in Portland, we frequently head to Asmara. We typically get a variety of all vegetarian dishes, all of which have been delicious.

No silverware here! Food is served on Injera, a sourdough type flat bread. You tear off that and pinch up your food or just eat with your hands. It was different and fun. The food was very flavorful. Friendly service. Cool little place, not "touristy."

I was stationed in Asmara, Ethiopia back in the 60s but never ate the local food. This evening, I added and checked off eating Ethiopian food from by bucket list! The fact that there is no silverware on the table and that they bring out hot towels for you to wash your hands is a clue that this is a... More

The only, only draw back to Asmara's when we last ate there was service that was a little bit slow, and not always accurate (tried to order coffee a few times ... never came, oh well). But all that is besides the point when you're served a communal plate of veggies, beef stew and chicken on wonderfully spongy injera bread.... More

When I eat at Asmara, I feel like a guest in Asmeret Teklu's home I have been lucky enough to know about this restaraunt since it opened. It is my favorite place to eat. Anywhere. Ever. The food is amazingly delcious in ways that food can only dream to be. The honey wine is to die for. I have never... More

This restaurant was very different, the meals we tried were spicy and very tasty. Eating with your fingers takes you back at first but quickly you get the hang of it. The staff were friendly and helpful with explaining the meal details to us. We all enjoyed the meal and are looking forward to a return visit soon.
