Really delicious food

Asmara is one of my favorite restaurants in Portland. The giant platter of injera topped with chicken, lamb, lentils, cabbage-- the choices go on and on-- is delicious and spicy (if you like it that way) and satisfying. Order a Tusker and you might feel transported to another continent.

The food was very good and the all the various employees, except our server, provided great service. The coffee ceremony, including freshly roasted and ground coffee, was delicious. I would definitely recommend it for a nice change of pace.

If you're new to Ethiopian/Eritrean food look no further for the REAL thing ! ! ! The cuisine is extraordinary and the menu is broad and varied. The Injera that is both serving platter and utensils for the entree is gluten free teff bread. Wonderful ! Best value add on side is the salad with shredded injera. Lamb is amazing...... More

The Asmara justifiably gets a lot of nice reviews. It certainly is a break from the other fare that you get around downtown but it can get crowded at lunch; try a late lunch (after 2:30 pm) when you might be the only diners there with the family that runs it. Be sure to get the hot tea, and don't... More

The lamb dishes are flavourful and the fried kale is delicious. I cannot get enough of the injera and often order an additional one to share with the group. Friendly staff and great value for money. They have half off lunch entrees during the week

It was great to find out the there was an Ethiopian/Eritrean restaurant in Maine to add to the diverse mix of options for such a small state. We got the sambusa as a starter and the vegetarian platter for my family and I to share and also the chicken tibsi for main courses. The food was all great and the... More

This is an Eritrean restaurant, our first. Meals are eaten with fingers and using what is effectively a thick crepe made using an African grain meal flour. The food was quite spicy and we did end up with turmeric stained fingertips but we did enjoy the food and it was a very friendly and reasonably priced meal. Better than greasy... More

My wife and I were taking my 22 year old vegan daughter out for here last restaurant meal before she started hiking the AT up in Maine. My wife and daughter ordered something called sponge bread onto which they put all sorts of cooked vegies and i think a little lamb. They really liked it. It had two very small... More

Came in on a Sunday night when passing through Portland, no one else around, but greeted with very friendly service and enthusiasm by the owner. Ordered red lentils and collard greens, service was relatively quick and dishes were flavorful. It would have been great to have a vegetarian sampler plate with more dishes for 1-2 people, but no big deal.... More

the injerra (pancake "plates") were delicious. Both of our selections were excellent, and they had some Kenyan beer that we liked. (Tusker).
