J's was one of the recommendations from our Allagash hostess. We chose to eat lunch outside under the cover since the wait for inside was around 30 minutes. Our waiter, Harry, was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed conversing with him. Two of us thought the haddock sandwich was very tasty. Another person liked the lobster stew. The 4th member of... More

We were disappointed that J's Oyster did not have any oyster stew. We tried the Oysters Rockerfeller and were very disappointed, lots of bland spinach, no sauce and tiny oysters. The lobster roll was very good. Overall, we were disappointed and rate this place as "okay".

Recently we planned to meet our friends at J's Oyster in Portland. As luck would have it we planned it on a day that would turn out to be sunny but cool. When we got to the restaurant we decided to eat outside and were able to get a table in the sun, but was under the outdoor canopy. The... More

Worst of the eight oyster rolls I had in Maine. The oyster was ice cold as if it had just come out of a cooler and rather than being succulent and sweet, it was tasteless and mealy. The butter was on the side, but it was not butter. It was very greasy margarine. Service was marginal as was my wife's... More

Some locals recommended that we eat at J's Oyster Bar while we were in Portland ME and we don't regret it one bit. It was crowded with locals, loud, lots of beer being consumed, and and all around great night. My lobster was wonderful...big, delicious, and corn on the cob they served with it was the best I have had... More

We were at J's last week and it was pretty good. Much like the good points posted here. Went back the other day and what a difference. Service was bad and the food was not good. The oysters had been shucked earlier in the day, you can tell because they were dried up on the top. My wife had the... More

This restaurant was recommended to us by the hotel where we were staying. It's basically a pub which sells food - very busy and noisy - very popular with locals. Nevertheless the service was good as was the food. After sharing a very good bowl of clam chowder my wife had prawn scampi with angel hair pasta and I had... More

Went here upon a locals advise for lobster, and were not let down! Grabbed a late night seating, and were advised that the lobster rolls were not available, which was fine as we were there for the steamed lobster and oysters. Delicious! Will be back again if we find ourselves in Portland. __Large outdoor seating available, though we opted for... More

If your looking for fancy and high end this is not your place. If you are looking for local flavor and people with good food and nice times then this is it.
