It's all about lobster when in Maine; this was a good place to get it

J's was recommended to us by two local tour gudes we met while in Portland. They promised J's would deliver good lobster, good service and prices that were better than many of the more upscale lobster restaurants in the area. After eating everything on our plates, we agreed with their assessments... read more

There in early June celebrating a BIG birthday. Wanted something special but party wanted to eat early after a day of biking around town,so we drove around and ended up at an "upscale" restaurant with $4 oysters. Where is the overhead on oysters? They come from yards away and you shuck them. C;mon!!. Fantastic barmaid pointed us to J's. Walked... More

We ate at Eventide Oyster Company before J's because it got amazing reviews. It was good, but overpriced. J's Oyster was everything we wanted and more. We ordered oysters (delicious and a very reasonable priced) and mussels. Both were superb!!! To be honest, they were the best we had in Maine. We ate outside and loved it. Our waiter was... More

This place was GREAT! You are amongst the locals of Portland in all their glory, rubbing elbows with folks who can steer you to what they do and where they go, not just where tourists off the cruise boats are sent. Food was great, atmosphere was even better. VERY small, noisy, bustling but friendly...PROBABLE wait in line against the wall... More

While vacationing in Portland we inquired from one of the local shopkeepers which seafood restaurant he'd recommend for lunch. He said all the tourists went to another local seafood restaurant, but if we wanted a good meal at a decent price go to J's. Needless to say there was nothing that stood out about the meal or the service. The... More

I loved the lobster roll, and especially the New England Clam Chowder. We started with crab stuffed mushrooms and they were full of lump crab meat broiled in butter with a hint of wine or sherry. Very good. A local place, very casual on the water, and very crowded. We waited 20 minutes but well worth it.

We arrived early for lunch as its a popular spot for both locals and tourists. I had the lobster stew which was delicious and my husband had a lobster roll that he enjoyed. When he went to put pepper on his lunch the cap was not tight and it dumped pepper on the lobster roll. When our wonderful waitress noticed,... More

We were only in Portland for two nights, and J's was recommended by several "locals". Even though it was a beautiful evening, we only waited about 20 minutes and had a GREAT table right next to the water outside. Our waitress was delightful as well as helpful. The food was DELICIOUS! My husband had a seafood casserole and I had... More

We have 6 people in our party and was told by one of the waitress there we have to sit at one small table in their outside area that's barely enough room to sit and service 4 people. When we got two tables ourselves together, the waiter told us he would charge us extra because of that. He also did... More

While in Portland we wanted lunch and J's had been highly recommended. Unfortunately we found our meals to be mediocre at best. And they weren't cheap. The people who recommended J's had gone off season so maybe that is the key. Disappointed
