Friendly people, great food, what else is there! My first stop in Portland, they have the best, and I mean the best lobster roll.

Forget about the looks and appearance. The ambiance here is great! Walk right in and sit right down.....the food here is superb! After sampling New England Clam Chowder at multiple restaurants in Portland over three days, J's was the overwhelming choice of our party of four seasoned chowder lovers. Not only the best in Portland but likely the best we... More

We heard that this was the "best in town". Apparently Anthony Bordain visited here and loved it. I guess if you are in to raw oysters... it must be good. I ordered Oysters Rockefeller (3 for $9.50). WAY too much spinach and the oyster meat was very small. Just didn't do it for me... Also had the whole Maine lobster... More

Looking like a pub with tables and a little out if place in upmarket Portland, we were recommended J's as where the locals eat. We arrived on a Monday evening and had to wait 20 minutes for a table as it was so busy. Its rough and ready but you can see the food being prepared and its all obviously... More

We arrived in the rain, and had to stand outside in line for a table, which wasn't so great! But it shows how popular the place is. While we were waiting, we saw some of the kitchen in action, which wasn't too impressive really - the clam chowder was being ladled out of a tub and stuck in the microwave... More

The Lobster Roll was full of big chucks of lobster/ The steamers were great. Sort of like a "hole in wall " type place. The wait staff were very friendly.

The atmosphere is more like a pub. Friendly. Great food - lots of locals & a few tourists. Starred eats - very, very good. Our server, Barry, was awesome. He said he'd been @ J's 13 years and is a short-timer compared to the rest of the staff. Management must be doing something right. Barry who is from Portland, was able... More

Looking inside may turn you off, but we had one of the best meals of our trip there. The scallops are a "must-have" item. The seafood casserole was also really good and very rich.

This restaurant was a small dingy place by the water. It was dark and the lights above us were burnt out, but i could tell that from the outside. The service was good, the lobster(my first) was good, the waitress showed us how to eat it...i did enjoy my food and the atmosphere of the place.

The lobster platter with clams was excellent! The downside was that we waited for 60 minutes for a table; but it was worth it because of the good food!
