Great spot for seafood, even without oysters

Yes, we were pleased to be sent to this "divey" (pretty tame, actually) joint by our hotel in Portland for an early dinner, but even at 7pm on a recent weeknight, they had run out of oysters.? The cheerful, hardworking servers quickly subbed out an equally fresh bucket of clams, with instructions... read more

Always fun to sit at the bar & enjoy breakfast with some local fishermen! Yummy food & great coffee. The local hot sauce is sweet & spicy.

Crowded, loud, and you have to get accustomed to the fish smell. Very small so you are close to your neighbor Food is average at best

The food is always great. My wife loves the lobster salad. I do the raw oysters and oyster stew is another favorite. Good selection of local beers. The service is always great and pleasant even though it is always crowded.

We loved this place. Good lobster roll and decent oysters (some were a little gritty) and a good bar selection. It's a little run down in but a good way - has a dingy sea-port vibe on the inside which makes sense. The patrons were a mix of mid-day drinkers (we were there on a Tuesday at lunch and bar... More

Great Spring day in Portland, up and coming seaport area. It does have parking a plus for this area. Some marina water view, had nice table by the window. Ordered the haddock chowder which was a light creamy base with plenty of fish, recommend it highly. My wife had the clam chowder and it was just as good. Looking for... More

What can I say, I have been going to J's for 30 years. I hate to write this review because the place is so popular now that any more visitors may make it hard for me to find a seat! What I love about J's is you never know who you'll sit next too. From fisherman to movie stars.... From... More

I stumbled on this place after a trip out to the islands in Casco Bay. This totally in-remarkable white building stands on the waterfront with car parking all around. There is a front door you would expect on a domestic house. You enter onto a bar area and you will be thinking, oh no; I came here to eat, not... More

So-so place off industrial sea front at Portland. Oysters were ok, mid priced, mid sized. Some of the shells were still muddy underneath. We arrived on Monday at 6:00pm and the place was buzzing. Although we didn't have it the lobster full plate looked good and was reasonably priced. One downer was that we were given the wrong bill for... More

My wife and I are in Maine on the way home from Brunswick and after a "ok" lunch at a much more pricey and way too "hipster" place on the way up to Brunswick, we stopped at J's for lunch. Great local joint with a really nice bar (where we sat), a beautiful raw bar right in the middle of... More
