The Lobster Roll was full of big chucks of lobster/ The steamers were great. Sort of like a "hole in wall " type place. The wait staff were very friendly.

The atmosphere is more like a pub. Friendly. Great food - lots of locals & a few tourists. Starred eats - very, very good. Our server, Barry, was awesome. He said he'd been @ J's 13 years and is a short-timer compared to the rest of the staff. Management must be doing something right. Barry who is from Portland, was able... More

Looking inside may turn you off, but we had one of the best meals of our trip there. The scallops are a "must-have" item. The seafood casserole was also really good and very rich.

This restaurant was a small dingy place by the water. It was dark and the lights above us were burnt out, but i could tell that from the outside. The service was good, the lobster(my first) was good, the waitress showed us how to eat it...i did enjoy my food and the atmosphere of the place.

The lobster platter with clams was excellent! The downside was that we waited for 60 minutes for a table; but it was worth it because of the good food!

I was in Portland 6 years ago and my wife and I just took a chance and tried what looked like a local place and we were glad we did. 6 years later I have to return for business and the first place on my mind was J's. I checked in my hotel and headed straight for the place and... More

We were looking forwards to oysters and a bloody mary on a damp Saturday afternoon. The place was crowded and there was a big pile of oysters behind the bar. Unfortunately the oysters were simply awful. They were not properly shucked (the oyster was still stuck to the shell) and all the natural liquid was intentionally dumped out by the... More

Did lots of research to choose one dinner spot for our one night in Portland. J's was the choice and did not disappoint! If you want a quiet fancy place, this ain't it! This is a loud and local joint. The staff are super nice - I read that in other reviews and did not believe it. But the ladies... More

I have visited J's on a couple of other occasions after first watching Anthony Bordain's visit on No Reservations. It is old school Portland that smacks a bit of being overrun by tourists (like me). There are always locals sitting at the bar or eating in the restaurant. They are famous for their Steamers which are a must have during... More

Went here on recommendation of a friend. Looking forward to some good local oysters. They didnt have any! They only had one type from Virginia. Large, no taste, not that perfect combo of sweet and briny. Ordered a side salad. Just so-so, with a pack of dressing on the side. Noisy, dark and not real clean!
