If you get a table for two on the upper level, make sure you bring a flashlight. The only light is a poor candle. You cannot see a thing. The waitress gave us a flashlight, but that didn't help when dinner arrived. If food is a visual thing, you are eating blind. Luckily I asked for the flashlight to read... more

Ambiance: Romantic! Loved the exposed brick and candles! Be sure to request a table near the windows. They have tables right next to the open kitchen and I imagine it would be quite warm and loud. Food: Bread (from Standard Bakery) was wonderful. Enjoyed my Maine greens salad (had a nice pepper flavor) and my Husband liked 2 of the... more

This is the best restaurant in Portland. As was previously mentioned in a review I can't understand how this is # 17 on tripadvisor. Perhaps it's a "price point" vs "tripadvisor patron" budget issue. The Green elephant is in fact very good as is Duckfat. But as far as quality, consistency, and sourcing go, Fore Street can't be beat. If... more

I guess expectations are everything. We had been trying to get reservations here for a special occasion for a year-- always too busy. Finally got in on a Sunday night. It was no where near as impressive as I had been lead to believe. First, it was so dark you could not read the menu-- a guy at the next... more

Plan ahead and make reservations or take a chance and stop by early on a weeknight. Don't miss the mussels roasted in the wood burning oven. We have eaten here many times and the food is always good, the waitstaff is well informed and its fun to watch the cooks in action. We like the fact that the chef finds... more

I usually agree with everything on Tripadvisor. I have been a member and contributor for years and years but HOW in the world can this place be rated at #17 in Portland?? Maybe #17 in the USA but in Portland, this is number one by such a wide margin it isnt even funny!! Let's put it another way, my wife... more

Dined at Fore Street in mid May while visiting Maine. By far the best dining experience of the trip. We loved the comfortable setting, good service, fresh local meats and produce. We ordered the mussels, a pasta appetizer, salad, grilled swordfish, and the port loin - all great. Would not hesitate to go there again. more

We were in Portland two nights on our way to Bar Harbor. This was recommended by our hotel (Marriott). Super staff relaxing, entertaining and romatic. I know hard to believe. Now on to the food. We tried three dishes and were allowed to split which allowed us to try more. Pizza was great! Salad delish and the roasted chicken out... more

Had dinner at Fore Street on a Saturday evening arriving at 5:00 PM without a reservation. There was a line to get on a waiting list when we arrived. After a 20 minute wait we reached the hostess station and were offered a 7:00 PM seating. We went for a stroll around the Old Port and arrived back at the... more
