Worth the trip back

Stopped here while antiquing. Returned due to exceptional blueberry pie. BLTTs (BLTs with turkey) were quite good. Blueberry pie has a minimum of flaky single crust, hundreds of tiny Maine blueberries very slightly sugared, no filler and homemade whipped creme as a top crust. It's all my... read more

We stopped for lunch on our way thru Ellsworth as we have enjoyed Helen's in Machias. We expected to enjoy this place. Overall the restaurant felt a bit run down and the food was not very good. In particular I had a 'pastrami sandwich on rye' which seemed more like pastrami on white bread with little to no mustard and... More

Blueberry pie has a minimum of flaky single crust, hundreds of tiny Maine blueberries very slightly sugared, no filler and homemade whipped creme as a top crust. It's all my friends talked about until we returned. I'd had the lemon meringue, which was... More

This is one of those hometown feel restaurants. Our waiter was happy and welcoming, but for some reason the food came out quite slow. Others that were seated around us later than us were already half way through their meal by the time ours came out. And we did not order anything unusual. Must have just been a fluke or... More

Just average - food, service. Hard to find. A bit pricey for just average fare. Lobster bisque chewy and not what I expected in Maine.

We recently stayed in Ellsworth and were looking for someplace to eat upon our arrival since we've never been there before. We read a glowing review of Helen's on something printed so decided to give it a try. The waitress was nice except she kept forgetting to bring lemon for our water. The food was fair and that is all... More

This place reminds me of a Texas roadside greasy spoon. It had a generally dirty feel, bad aroma, and the food is bland and uninspired at best. I usually give restaurants a second chance, but not this one.

We were visiting family and they had raved about this place, so we decided to give it a chance. I wished I opted for the seafood because it looked better than the rubbery, grilled chicken I had ordered. The slice of apple pie was disappointing. The sugar overwhelmed the filling and the pie crust looked as though it was baked... More

We went there in the evening, on a weekend. It was very busy, but waitress was very good, not hurried at all. She went out of her way to make sure everything was the way we wanted it. Due to diet restrictions we asked about sugar free desert. Very surprised they did have it, plus it was excellent! Large variety... More

Sadly, Helen's has gone downhill over the last few years. Once known for their delicious home-style cooking, the meals lately have been overcooked (my rib-eye was charred on both sides and tasteless). Advertised items were not available (prime rib offered on menu board at entrance - gone at 5:30?). One bright light in this miasma of gloom were the pies.... More

Stopped at the Vistor Center and the friendly and helpfull volunteer highly recommended "Helens " and she was bang on. The display case of homemade pies is the first thing you pass on the way to your table or booth. Service was fast and friendly.Food is homemade and delicious.Started with Lobster stew, buttery and loaded with chunks of lobster.Had liver and... More
