Just Ok

Waiter very friendly and efficient. Pasta swinning in oil,VERY unappetizing and made eating the dish an unpleasant experience. Dish described as "chicken and spinach." What you get is gloppy oil soaked small masses of it with small cubed shaped chicken?! It might've been good if everything wasn't... read more

We had dined at Scarlet Begonis previously in 2013 and were underwhemed. We received a gift certificate as and decided to try it again. Before heading out I called to see if they offered gluten free options and was assured they did. I first ordered a pasta dish and specified I would like the gluten free version. The waitress said... I go out to eat 3-5 times a week. I try new places all of the time. The one thing I rate restaurants by is the ability to cook a great burger. Since the burger is epidemic throughout the country, this should be a masterpiece of any establishment. Everytime I enter I immediately walk up to the bar and sit,... More

Easy to get to, limited menu. Pricing is a little on the high side and the food is average. During our visit, the service was very slow. We waited for over 45 minutes to receive our lunch even though there were only four other people in the restaurant. Hopefully the service is much faster at other times.

While visiting Bowdoin College, we were referred to Scarlet Begonias for dinner and we enjoyed it very much. Service was warm and efficient, the food was beautifully prepared from obviously fresh ingredients, and the pricing was reasonable. I recommend the local lemonade.

Pleasant and bright space, convenient to the train station and college, hospitable staff, but rather pricey for standard fare with nothing distinguishing to make it rise significantly above the usual pub menu. The plain, slim hamburger was local, clearly in the better taste, but not great value in size and with a scattering of ordinary chips and a super-thin pickle.... More

We tried the pizza for the first time, as in the past we've been in a rut with the wonderful Reuben Sandwich and the home-made soups. The pizza is as good as everything else, with a really strong herb presence. I ordered a reuben, and it was as good as ever. Very good corned beef, perfectly toasted bread, nice fresh... More

This is the place to go in town for a nice atmosphere and great food. They have their own unique take on Italian dishes. Go all out for the Hughes' dilemma: sausages, chicken and loads of garlic in red sauce over penne. Awesome! The sangria is superb. They have local beer and the wines change from time to time as... I have been here a few times to eat and drink and each time has been exceptionally good. Always consistent with great portion sizes and courteous staff. Their pasta is to die for as well as their burger (notably, the Saber). Check them out. I choose this restaurant again and again!

Scarlet Begonias started as a cozy neighborhood place. Food was prepared in sight of diners, and was a good and tasty value. Moving to a larger location has created a monster--mediocre food with none of the charm of the original location. My last (and I do mean last) visit was a disgusting nightmare. I ordered a Caesar salad. When it... More
