local place that i had not tried

My hubby is a coupon guy and he had one for checks so if we go. I had never been but he used to go when he worked in the area. The burger, club sandwich, and onion rings were good. The German potato salad was not like my grandmas so I was disappointed. I saw the fish and will order... read more

Good atmosphere, especially to watch a game. Went for late lunch over the weekend. The chili was only okay and I probably won't do it again (I like mine with more chili powder and flavor), but the fish was great!!!! Great flavor, crispness, and it was huge!!!! It was 2 huge pieces for 1 sandwich. Great value. It had been... More

This place is an institution because it hasn't changed in many years. It's fun if you remember that most menus and decor have been updated and that for the most part that is a good thing. Good burgers and good prices but nothing special. It is an authentic local bar and if that's what you want, you won't be disappointed.... More

We checked the Trip Advisor app's "Near Me Now" function after dropping our son off for grad school at U of L and wound up at Check's after reading several positive reviews. Glad we stopped in. I had a tasty rueben, which was flavorful, if a little skimpy on the corned beef. My husband had a club on rye and... More

My wife and I were strolling through Germantown around lunch time and came upon Check's. We called our daughter to join us and when she arrived we went in for lunch at about 11:30. We had no problem getting a table, but I suspect that by 12:15 on a weekday that the place is packed. They had a number of... More

Best BLT in town. How does such a tiny kitchen puts out such consistently good food? Great burgers, chef salad, fish sandwich, onion rings, brats. I haven't had a bad meal here in over 20 years of patronage. Order your food and beverage at the bar. Leave your name for the food. Pay. Take your drinks, and soup if you... More

You just don't find these kind of places any more. Real people, real food, a real neighborhood atmosphere. Hope Louisvillians realize what a treasure they have here. Walk to the bar, order your food and beer from Cathy, pay your bill and soak in the real Louisville. The menu, written on a grease board, features a little bit of bar... More

You would not expect such an excellent selection of food in this place just by looking at it from the outside. It looks like any other corner neighborhood bar but the kitchen has maintained a LONG tradition of hot and fresh food. I've been going here since I was a kid and always look forward to the Cheeseburger and Fries,... More

This is a friendly neighborhood, Schniztleberg, that serves a big variety if food, some German, but mostly American bar food. Really a fun place, great beer selection, good sandwiches and even rolled oysters as good as Mazzonis used to be. We were there on Karaoke night and the place was packed. We like lunch there a lot too. Recommend Checks... More

This old tavern has been here in Louisville's old Germantown neighborhood for many years and has changed very little in that time. If you are looking for the best brats, bean soup, chili, fried fish, etc. you have ever eaten this is the place. We come here a few times a year from our suburban home on the outskirts of... More
