We live in nearby Sarlat and so eat at many of the restaurants in the area. La Gabarre is always our choice for special meals with friends or for birthdays. The setting is magical and the staff are friendly and efficient. However the food is the real star of the show. One recent review described the food as "rustic". I... More

Enjoyed our meal here, friendly waitstaff who'd happily translate the French menu (written on blackboards) for you. Pretty friendly prices too. For a more detailed account (with photos), check out my travel journal: http://fatboo.com/2014/07/loire-dordogne-valley-midi-pyrenees-france.html

An interesting eating place on the banks of the river – being a pleasant evening, we were able to eat outside; there were tables laid up indoors and on a second terrace but neither were in use the night that we were there. Perhaps being a Tuesday evening, they were not expecting too many diners although several arrived who had... More

This place is the place to go when coming to Dordogne. The food, the place and the people are just fabulous. Make sure you book in advance the place is small and they get easilly fully booked.

This restaurant is perhaps more adventurous than the nearby Le Roi Carotte although both have their attractions. The blackboard with its frequently changing menu is brought to your table and you choose, mix and match, from the €27 and €35 cartes. For entree I chose duck pate topped with a slice of pate de foie gras accompanied by crisp vegetables.... More

Visited last year and pleased to return. Maître d', chef's wife and waiter provide a most pleasant front of house staff. Good English, engaging manner and warm humour. Recommendations offered and accepted, options of switching between menus "no problem". Ambience enchanting on this warm June lunchtime. Views over river, herons, kites and calling frogs enriching the magic. Prawn starter unusual... More

We had been in the Dordogne area of France for a couple of weeks, mainly self catering. However, for the last few days of our holiday we were joined by friends and decided to try one of the local restaurants. After some deliberation (and driving around) we came across La Gabarre restaurant situated on the bank of the river with... More

This restaurant is an absolute gem. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the food is exquisite, the atmosphere homey. We ate here two successive nights with friends and were delighted to find different menus on each night, each of which was outstanding. We celebrated our anniversary on one of the nights and were treated to singing in our honor... More

A beautiful setting but the food was rather disappointing. We had very high expectations, which is probably half the problem. The staff was either over the top or rather snobby, it was very strange. As far as I am concerned, it was a mixed experience for a lot of money.
