Local fine food

Having visited our 9th Madonna of the Trail down the block, we stopped at the Hayes House for lunch. Good local beer, Free State Ad Astra, BLT, and skillet fried chicken. All very good, and enough that the meal lasted us through hikes at the Tall Grass Prairie.

Family lunch that was enjoyed by all. Home cooked food, great lunch menu with lots of choices and has a salad bar. Our group had chicken fried steak, chili hamburger, fried chicken, salad bar and grilled cheese sandwich. Prices are very reasonable. If in the area, make this a stop-you will enjoy it. All in a restaurant that has been... More

This restaurant located on the Santa Fe Trail was established in 1857 and is the oldest continually operating west of the Mississippi River. It is in the heart of Council Grove and there are brochures in the lobby listing all the historic sites in the area. I have been here several times and never had a poor meal. It has... More

I was excited about eating at the oldest restaurant West of the Mississippi. I drug my wife and daughter to it expecting awesome food. A restaurant that has been in business this long has to have awesome food...right? The menu was quite diverse but the items were kind of expensive. We all decided to get the buffet of the day,... While taking the off road route to Manhattan, Kansas, we stopped late in the afternoon to eat at the Hayes House. We enjoyed the frontier interior and the friendliness of the wait staff. We each ordered variations of chicken dishes. To our disappointment, the food was very average. Having heard positive comments about the restaurant, we had expected something special.... More

This is one of the most beautiful restaurants you can find anywhere. The historical value alone is worth the visit! This place has been renovated back to its original condition from the upstairs tavern to the basement!! The food is excellent and they also serve drinks in the upstairs tavern! Its a little expensive, but worth it!

Place is being refurb'ed, which is fine, but it's less then half full at 7:30 on a Saturday and its 30 minutes to fix food? Really? And you ran out of brisket before dinner started? The salad bar is VERY sparse and the prices scream tourist. See photo for current menu.

A nice place to take the family out. Place is antique and homely, service was great. They really made us feel at home. Good people and good food, we'll definitely be back.

Our family stopped at Hays House on the way home after a weekend road trip. Boy it's off the beaten path, but what a sweet reward when you arrive! We had absolutely fantastic service! When we opened the menu they had a surprisingly diverse selection - not just your every day country food choices. We were also a little surprised... More

My wife and I had Saturday lunch here as part of a day spent looking at the sights in Council Grove. We've driven through town many times but had not stopped until now. We walked into the place and stood for 10 minutes waiting to be seated. It was busy, but there didn't seem to be a hostess, just several... More
